Will Great Lakes Ice Coverage Beat or Tie Last Year's Winter Or The Record? [VANITY]
Great Lakes Coastal Forecasting System (GLCFS) ^ | 17FEB2017 | Jack Hydrazine

Posted on 02/17/2015 8:42:22 PM PST by Jack Hydrazine

According to NOAA's Great Lakes Surface Environment Analysis (GLSEA) the record for total Great Lakes ice coverage was set in 1979 with 94.7% coverage. Last year's winter almost broke that record with 92.2% and is currently sitting in second place.

Just a few days ago the ice coverage sat at 60%. Today that number has jumped to 76.6% based on yesterday's analysis due the recent cold the area has been receiving.

Their forecast for the next 24 hours is for that coverage to jump to 82.3%. This is within 10% of second place.

Some long range weather forecasts I have seen for the next two weeks indicates that the cold temperatures will stay entrenched in the area. I'm of the opinion that the record of 94.7% will be broken.

What say you?

I forgot to include the WattsUpWithThat.com website for their Great Lakes ice coverage reference page.

Yep, I have spent untold hours blowing and scraping global warming from my driveway and sidewalks over the past week. And I don’t live in Boston.

You have some time on your hands Mr. Hydrazine I see. While it is not for me to judge the importance of any post, I must add that you should make a nice meal of mushrooms, oregano, and sour cream; it would have been a better usage of your time. I can give you the recipe if you wish. Cheers....

Coldest February on record?

On Monday morning, Erie, PA, tied its all-time record low of –18°F, and Buffalo dipped to –10°F, its coldest temperature since January 6, 1996.

Dozens of daily records could tumble later this week, and some locations–especially mid-South locations with snow cover–will be in a good position to set records for lowest temperature so late in the winter. The currently predicted lows for Friday of –8°F in Lexington, KY, and –4°F in Nashville, TN, would do the trick.

In fact, this week could end up as the coldest of the 21st century for millions of people. With no sign of letup in the cold for at least a week, several Northeastern cities and states are within reach of their coldest February in a century or more of record keeping. Three examples:

Oh nooooee....we’re doomed to a frozen death!

I think it will come close to making 2nd place -— if Lake Michigan cooperates and accelerates its surface freezing process.

Will the militia have to go back to the Ohio beaches to fight off the marauding, but polite, Canadian masses?

Back to Ontario! eh?

Oh, no! They already have a forward operating base south of my location. Abandon the state... retreat behind the river and blow the bridges.

I’m not a fan of mycological gastronomy, but a nicely smoked salmon might work for me!
