Mummy Found Hiding [sic] Inside Ancient Buddha Statue

The mummy may have once been a respected Buddhist monk who, after death, was worshipped as an enlightened being, one who helped the living end their cycle of suffering and death, said Vincent van Vilsteren, an archaeology curator at the Drents Museum in the Netherlands, where the mummy (from inside the Buddha statue) was on exhibit last year.

The secret hidden in the gold-painted statue was first discovered when preservationists began restoring the statue many years ago. But the human remains weren't studied in detail until researchers took scans and samples of tissue from the mummy late last year.

A Peruvian mummy who hid in an urn for 875 years is challenging this win. He claims that the Chinese monk merely sat down to meditate and his overzealous grandson got carried away with his papier-mâché for a school project. Therefore he wasn’t really hiding and is not a proper contestant.

You really need to be careful with any mummy that can hide itself. You never know what else it can do.

Thanks for the Ping. Nothing like locking oneself into a statue and then going for it! Only in China?

No, the article talks about similar practices in Japan,
minus the statue. I guess that might be only in China.

Thanks for the ping, Sensei. I read all about this on Fox news this morning. I was shocked to find out that
when the monks are dying, they are entombed with a breathing tube so that they may meditate until they die.
