Oldest evidence of breast cancer found in Egyptian skeleton

A team from a Spanish university has discovered what Egyptian authorities are calling the world's oldest evidence of breast cancer in the 4,200-year-old skeleton of an adult woman.

Antiquities Minister Mamdouh el-Damaty said the bones of the woman, who lived at the end of the 6th Pharaonic Dynasty, showed "an extraordinary deterioration".

"The study of her remains shows the typical destructive damage provoked by the extension of a breast cancer as a metastasis," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Despite being one of the world's leading causes of death today, cancer is virtually absent in archaeological records compared to other diseases - which has given rise to the idea that cancers are mainly attributable to modern lifestyles and to people living for longer.

But the finding, along with evidence reported last year by British researchers of metastatic cancer in a 3,000-year-old skeleton found in a tomb in modern Sudan, suggests cancer was around in the Nile Valley in ancient times.

The anthropological team from the University of Jaen said the Egyptian woman was an aristocrat from Elephantine, the country's southernmost town.

Her remains were discovered in the necropolis of Qubbet el-Hawa, west of the southern city of Aswan, the ministry said.

According to the World Health Organization's cancer research agency, new cancer cases rose to an estimated 14 million a year in 2012, a figure seen rising to 22 million within 20 years.

OK, so, you dig up bones that are supposedly 4 thousand years old and you then you say you can identify breast cancer?

That's pushing it a bit but we live in an age when to be "scientific" means to "push it."

My first wife died of metastatic breast cancer. I can’t imagine a woman going through that without modern surgery and oncology. John Adams daughter in law died of it as well.

Metastatic cancer leaves marks on the bones. They know this from studying contemporary cancer victims. It’s amazing what can be learned from a well-preserved cadaver.

My theory is that some cancers, such as skin cancer, were just as prevalent in ancient populations, but simply haven’t been identified due to lack of remains and lack of evidence on bones. Other cancers would be less common because of shorter lifespans as well as other lifestyle variations.

I remember seeing the TV movie about Adams that showed how they endured surgery in those days....a block of wood between the teeth. Unimaginable.

Yes. Mummies in the University of Pennsylvania Museum had varicose veins and gum disease too! It’s hardly worth trying, isn’t it?

Most cancers are in older people...in the past, people died at a younger age so didn’t die of cancer.

When these “confounding factors”—as they are called—are present, they make it difficult to sort out just how much induced abortions raise a woman’s lifetime breast cancer risk.

But they are largely absent in India, so the ABC link comes through loud and clear.

In fact, the ABC link these Indian studies confirm is stronger than other risk factors for breast cancer that we know of, such as advanced age, having a family history of breast cancer, or being childless.

Life News:
These new Indian studies have come to light not long after the publication of a huge meta-analysis of 36 (thirty-six!) studies done in Mainland China. This study also showed a statistically significant risk of breast cancer following abortion. For Chinese women who have had one or more induced abortions the increased risk was 44% (Odds Ratio 1.44). The risk jumped to 76% for women who had had two or more previous abortions.”

Here’s what creepy establishment ACA has to say about it:

‘Researchers have looked at the possible link between abortion and breast cancer for many years, but this has been a difficult area to study.’
