There is the significant risk of survivorship bias in the article’s headline. It’s only the right way for the survivors. It wouldn’t seem to be the right way if 999 out of 1000 people who tried it got eaten, but you won’t see youtube videos of those people, you will only see this one. I don’t know the actual statistics, but I wouldn’t take the headline as necessarily sage and safe advice for all bear encounters.
Yes - though to be honest, every "real-life" method of surviving an attack will suffer from that bias.
I venture to say that the method works - until it doesn't work.
