Need Help with Opera Spell Checking
My lame abilities ^ | 26 August 2015 | self

Posted on 08/26/2015 5:39:35 PM PDT by Bigg Red

When I compose a comment here or on Facebook, the spelling check function underlines every single word in red.

Problem began about 1 week ago and occurs only when I am using Opera. I went to the Opera settings, but I could not find a way to correct this.

Sorry, I am not tech savvy, and I would appreciate advice from someone who is.

Good luck. I have five teenagers who fix techie-things for me ... or further louse them up, depends on which one it is.

Check to make sure it's not using British spelling.

Here's a help page to step you through the process.

Yes, I checked to make sure it is set for American English.

If you made it to Dictionaries, scroll down to the bottom of that section and uncheck Enable spell checking.

Thanks, mark. That is the page that I went to before asking for help, but it doesn’t help me. I checked to make sure I was set on American English.

This is so odd, as I have been using Opera for a few years now, and, until this problem showed up, I never even looked at that settings page. So I can’t imagine what was changed and how it was changed.

Right now, as I type this, every single word is showing as misspelled. And if I right-click for a “correction” the phrase “no spelling suggestions” is not even dark like the other choices in the menu.

As an experiment, I just right-clicked on the word “click” in the previous paragraph and then selected “Add to dictionary” from the menu. So, now, that word is the only one among all of the words in this box that is not underlined as misspelled!

Honestly, if you were a geek I'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the dictionary files, but instead, I'll suggest trying to save or export any bookmarks/favorites and do a complete uninstall of the software and reinstall.

I don't personally use Opera nor do I use Windows so I can't give more specific advice than that.

I know how to disable the spell checking, but, although I am usually a good speller, I would prefer to have a spell check to fall back on when I mess up.

But, right now, I will disable and see what happens to this post....Result was that no words were marked.

So looks like my choice is to post without having my spelling checked. :(

...a complete uninstall of the software and reinstall.

That could be a disaster, so I’ll stay away from that option.

I have now disabled spelling, so I’ll just have to be much more careful with my typing and my proofreading, I suppose.

Thank you.

I’m using v31.0 and had the red underlining problem, too. Here’s how to get rid of it:

I have used Mozilla Firefox as the web browser specifically BECAUSE it has an automatic spell checker for every text-based reply field in every web page I use.

No problems with Mozilla, nor its library, nor library-add applications. (You right-click to select the proposed corrections from the popup list.)

Haven’t ever used Opera, won’t comment.

You’re welcome. Free Republic’s spell checker doesn’t work?

I just checked Opera with Free Republic and only had the misspelled words underlined. Perhaps reinstalling, as mentioned earlier, would be worth a try. The dictionaries might not have loaded properly.

I find spell checkers distracting at best. I like my mistakes to be my own, and as I’ve aged (and posted 200K times) I’ve been making more of them. Sometimes I just can’t remember between two spellings — often the same problem words that have been problems since I was in elementary school — and rely on the search engine, which takes a couple of seconds. :’) On the W8 machine the Chrome browser has spell check that works fine, even in the search engine boxes. :’)

That is exactly how it was for me in Opera until about a +/-week ago.
