Marysville police launched its own investigation after eight employees wrote letters seeking a more lenient sentence for convicted sex offender Jared Tomlinson.

"There were some sworn police officers. There were some professional staff with the department, and they were all people who knew the individual personally," said Marysville police chief Aaron Easton.

Watch report: Marysville police launch investigation into own department

Tomlinson joined Marysville police as an officer in 2007. He was arrested in 2013 for sexually molesting a child in the mid-2000s.

A jury convicted Tomlinson in February, but before sentencing, letters arrived at the Butte County Superior Court, asking the judge for leniency.

"So there's no question of collusion, or that we're covering up anyone of our own, and that we had full transparency, we thought it was important to use an independent group to look into the matter," Easton said.

One letter stood out because it was written on an official department form.

Detective Chris Miller wrote: "...Since Jared is a friend it is difficult for me to be impartial; however I do not feel the allegations made and subsequent conviction were just. But since the jury has made their decision and a sentence must be imposed, I would humbly submit a request for leniency."

"We support the fact that everyone has the right to voice their personal opinion. Where we get into the sticky situation is if that opinion bleeds over into becoming what would be official view from the department," Easton said.

He said one employee is now on administrative leave.

"That investigation that's being conducted isn't necessarily employee specific. They're investigating the incident as a whole to see if any violations were committed there," Easton said.

Easton said none of the letters reflect the official stance of his department.

The deputy district attorney says Tomlinson's sentence of 2 years and 4 months is much lower than what was asked, but he will have to register as a sex offender for life.

Well, hell, why even bother with all the time, trouble and expense of arresting someone, charging him or her with a crime, allowing him or her to defend himself or herself in a court of law before a jury of his or her peers?

Why not just aks Detective Chris Miller what he thinks about the person and what should be done with him or her?

It sure would save the people of Marysville a ton of money.

This guy is guilty of homosexual oral copulation. It started when the victim was 13. And they should be lenient? Why, because it’s OK to be a homo, or because this guy is a cop??

I think it’s important for cops to be trusted. If a cop can be corrupt and get by with it, or be treated better than others, then there is no reason to trust a cop. To set an example this piece of trash should be give the max sentence and placed with hard core criminals.

The beginning of corruption for that PD. THAT is how it starts. Make an exception “just this once” for a good ol’ boy, and rules and standards go down the tube. That’s exactly how the 2 political parties were corrupted.

Child molesters are often likeable, friendly “nice” guys.
That’s how they win over victims and why families do not suspect.
There should be no leniency for a molester for being a nice guy.
That’s one of the tools of their trade.

It’s part of a greater problem with acceptance of evil.

A stiff penalty might say PART of what needs to be said, but until people start again honoring what is good and right in the first place (and ultimately honoring God, the Author of it all) we only have the cell blocks to hell here.

It happens at a time when they critically need the public confidence too, when characters like Trayvon and Michael Brown appear.

Every man is in it for himself. Nobody has an eye on the common good, much less the Author of Goodness.

We are all reaping what has been sowed, and it is gnarly weeds indeed.

They have turned into self centered knights because they have forgotten God.

And forget about plastering “In God We Trust” on bumpers. How about writing it on hearts?

Without the grace of God, we all die and go to hell; and the grace of God must be personally accepted to be efficacious to us. We can’t scapegoat something and expect God to back off pacified when we are in general treating Him as little or nothing.
