16th century Mexican church re-emerges from underwater

The ruins of a 16th century colonial church have re-emerged from a reservoir due to the lack of rain in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. This year's drought has gripped the Grijalba river, which feeds the Nezahualcoyotl reservoir, dropping the water level by 75 feet.

It is the second time the church has emerged from underwater. In 2002, the water was so low visitors could walk inside the church.

The church, in the Quechula locality, is the work of a group of monks headed by Friar Bartolome de la Casas, who arrived in the region inhabited by the Zoque people in the mid-16th century.

I got to visit the church in San Ignacio/Baja back in 2000. You are overcome by a sense of history walking into that place. Still in operation too.

Someone once asked me why people built their houses on the top of the hill. This is why.

The church is in a reservoir so I think we're piecing a piece of the puzzle.

Oh, this will take some magic to believe; if the drop In water level/drought is caused by higher temperatures then how could the church have been built so long ago? And if the higher water level is caused the melting glaciers how did happen way back and why is water level so low now?

They must have flooded the valley to create the reservoir. The church looks like it was wrecked before then.

Reminds me of one of the areas on "Lord of the Rings Online", there is a big ruined temple half-sunk in a swamp, full of ghosts.

Reservoirs are man-made. The reservoir wasn’t there when the church was built.
