A posting request for my fellow FReepers (vanity)
me

Posted on 11/14/2015 7:47:15 AM PST by Leaning Right

Like many others here, I don't have cable. So I rely on FR for unfiltered breaking news. And there where quite a few good and informative threads last night about the Paris attacks. Thanks to all the posters for that!

Unfortunately, those threads were also peppered with distracting and silly attempts at humor. So here's my humble request. When the news is breaking - and serious - can we stay on-topic and avoid posting distractions?

And please don't think I'm being preachy here. I'm sure I've posted my share of inappropriate comments in the past.

I just mention this now as something to think about.

Should we start a Paris murder humor thread?

When we see absurd things: like Obama and Hollande, I think it is ok to point out their absurdity.

There is more often truth in those comments than the “sympathy” comments that do no good.

People with their 'cute' comments that could be confused for reality aren't.

A lot of times I'll have to double check to see who the publisher is.

It is annoying.

I’m inclined to agree. All those comments along the lines of “Must be those damned Amish again” are worn out and tiresome. And yes, I too have been guilty.

AGREED. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Too serious about something makes it all seem common place, part of the new normal. Levity, humnor, and smiles add joy to what is otherwise terrifying.

If I want serious, then tune in the radio, the TV, the cable.

You're not the first one to mention this. I was “yelled at” by a Freeper when I made a crack that the terrorists needed jobs. That was parroting what that State Department chick said a while back. It wasn't meant to be humorous, but rather, sarcastic.

We live in a terrible world made worse by evil and incompetent leadership. Sometimes we have to blow off some steam. If something offends you, scroll past it.

Let me start with this.

Two cannibals are walking through the jungle and come upon a dead clown, which they start eating. A few minutes later one cannibal turns to the other and says, “Does this taste funny to you?”.

The original poster is lucky not to have cable. They would have been subjected to Shep Smith and his attempts at trying to be poignant. As much as he tries, he could never match an off the cuff comment like Jim McKay. Shep probably writes “fan fiction” for Grey’s Anatomy!

I agree with you there. I don't find that distracting. It's actually part of the story.

What I do find distracting and unhelpful are the attempts at humor. Comments such as: "Oh, those Amish!", "Has the French Army surrendered yet?", etc.

Of course, all of this is just my opinion. And as I noted before, I mean it to apply to serious and breaking news only.

Good Grief! I was trying to totally forget that I heard Smith’s blather last nighrt after work ... Now, like a picture of H. Thomas, I’ll be haunted with the Smith sounds for the rest of my life ...

For a serious news thread that does not warrant comment...but only serves as a link to appropriate news sources...I would think that a simple post to the Admin Mods to lock the thread from further comments would be appropriate. If they think it appropriate. I’ve seen them do it before.

Fr is where I can safely blow off steam among like minded individuals.

I’ll be humorous if I need to. I paid for the privilege.

It wasn't meant to be humorous, but rather, sarcastic.

Whenever I post a comment meant to be sarcastic, I put a < /sarcasm > fake tag at the end. The fact that body language and facial expression cannot be seen in a post leads to a lot of miscommunication; fake tags help to make the intent clear.
