I’m looking at my Tervuren curled up at my feet. He’s going on 12, and nowhere near as active as he used to be, although he can still get a little frisky at times. I would live under a bridge and wipe my butt with leaves before I would ever abandon him.

Yup. People should have vet insurance to cover big bills.

Or take their pet to vet that serves low income patients.

There is always an alternative before going to the extremity of having to surrender your dog.

If people don’t have the money for medical expense’s,don’t own a pet.
Real simple.

That’s over 80 years old in human years. Some dogs can live to be 100.

People can afford routine care for their pets.

Not many people can afford catastrophic pet health care bills.

I mean it comes down to what is best for the animal in the end.

You can’t always foresee what is going to happen down the road.

Yeah - the average life expectancy for his breed is 10-12 years so he’s definitely well into his golden years...which is all the more amazing as he was heartworm positive and malnourished when I rescued him back in 2005. The vets didn’t think he would survive the heartworm treatment, but he soldiered through it.

Unable to watch- dealing with my 15 y/o Bichon mix rescue. He is blind and has congestive heart failure. I would never abandon an animal.

I’m not watching either-—just the header was enough to ruin my day.

I once read in a Boston paper that a family that had a country type home gave up two Irish Setters because they were redecorating to a Chinese influence and wanted to get Pekingeses because they would be more apropos..

Words failed me on that one.

If you face a $5,000 or $10,000 bill and that’s a lot of money and you don’t have it, its not humane to let your dog suffer for your needs.

The dog’s well-being should always come first.

That’s not a legitimate reason to give up your pet.

For some rich people, pets like a lifestyle accessory.

What they do is disgusting!

I was reading that as the guy wasn’t as active as he used to be instead of the dog....changes the perspective completely on the guy.

So you are saying if there is a medical problem let the Taxpayer instead of the owner handle it?

Just want to make sure I understand you correctly.

At some point, you’ll have to consider putting him to sleep if his quality of life is compromised to the point he’s in pain and suffering.

Until then, enjoy all your time you have left together and make them happy memories.

Us, too. Our Bichon Frise got an eye ulcer in early 2015 which required specialized doggie ophthalmologist do some corneal grafting. I didn’t ask my wife how much we spent and she has never told me (some things you are better off not knowing). I feel for families that simply don’t have the means to provide that level of care for their pets.

If there is a catastrophic medical problem, do what is right for your pet.

If you can’t afford the treatment and you’ve exhausted all options, its necessary to do the right thing.

One of my friends has an animal intervention program at the Orange County Animal Shelter. They help people who want to keep their pets but cannot due to monetary issues. Wished the owners would have taken the dog there.

As precious as animals are, for most people an animal’s life doesn’t have the same value as a human life.

That’s a reality. People live once and are gone for good. We can always adopt a new pet. I’ve done that a few times in my lifetime.

People do lose jobs and economic circumstances change over the life of a pet. This from a family who had to sell their daughter’s horse when she was 14 due to job loss. You simply would not believe how devastating that was for all of us.

Did the shelter inform the owner of their animal intervention program?

All of this could have been averted.
