NORTH CATASAUQUA, Pa. -Surrounded by his pets is when North Catasauqua's Tom Newhart may be at his happiest. But Newhart is now saddled with grief after Sugar, the six-year-old cat, he and his wife rescued at birth, was killed a week ago Sunday. Just hours after escaping from their home.

"It's like one of your children, you raised them, bottle fed them," he said through tears."I found the cat sitting right here," said Mike Lienert in his yard.Lienert, a neighbor, found Sugar late that Sunday night and said the cat looked injured. He called North Catasauqua Police for help.

"First thing at the door he said it's not politically correct but if injured we will put it down," Lienert said.

He said a short time later the officer shot the cat near his pool then telling Lienert he'd have to clean up the mess. He said aside from some poking and prodding, the officer never tried to catch the cat. Lienert went on to say aside from scared hissing, the cat wasn't aggressive.

Must be a shortage of dogs to shoot in that jurisdiction.

Do not call Police unless it is unavoidable. They seldom make the situation better.

Some of them are extremely skilled at filling an 8-hour shift with a grand total of 2 written reports. A bit of overtime never hurts either.

Ever wonder why the squad cars sit on the side of the road forever with lights flashing just to issue a preprinted ticket? Slow penmanship, intentionally or otherwise, just to tick boxes.

Don’t call the police for help. They will kill something, confiscate something, or arrest you. It’s what they do. Officer Friendly retired 20 years ago.

I hope there is an especially dark, nasty horrible corner of Hell reserved for people who abuse animals or kill them without just cause.

Thank goodness all the LEO involved made it home safe from the cat encounter. The fact that only one cat was involved was a major factor. If there were two cats involved, the police would have had to use one of these:

Amen.

My downstairs tenant got pranked by his wife. She called the police and said he was missing.

They broke the screen on his window, stumbled in, knocked things over, saw he wasn’t there, and said something along the lines of

“who gives a @#$@#$ if he’s dead, he’s not here”

great.

You are both absolutely correct.
See my posting history...I came within 1-2 seconds of getting myself shot simply as an innocent bystander reporting a minor fenderbender right in downtown.
All thanks to an extremely aggressive officer packed to the gills with anabolic steroids.
Police must make true community policing an essential component of their jobs.
Now that they have become successful at alienating law-abiding WASPs, it indicates they have sunk to a new low.

There has to be a lot missing from the story. Cat’s outside and you want it in, open the door, open a can of tuna, and wait. Cat’s injured, you put on a pair of leather work gloves and a think shirt, and you pick the cat up and take it to the vet. Cat wants to be left alone, it’s safest to leave it alone, if it is fully armed.

If it’s semi-feral, you catch it for surgery and shots, and then catch it once a year for shots. If it’s more or less domesticated, it will show up for food at dawn and dusk.

Guy’s reaction in wasting the cops time did get a response that should be anticipated.

Why would you call the police instead of animal control... or why not deal with the cat yourself and take it to a vet?

Thank you, I thought I was the only one that felt that way.

WASPS? No one cares anymore what WASPS think, except other WASPS.

And the WASPS I know have not mentioned any problem with police.

Now the proud officer can boast over drinks at the neighborhood hangout that he’s ‘fired his weapon in the line of duty.’
