Users need to upgrade to Windows 8.1, Internet Explorer 11
Microsoft is ending support for Windows 8 and older versions of Internet Explorer today.
Windows 8 users who haven't upgraded to Windows 8.1 and Internet Explorer users who aren't running the latest version of the web browser -- IE 11, in most cases -- will no longer have access to patches and updates to keep their software secure from malware and hackers when new vulnerabilities are discovered.
While Windows 8 was released in 2012, and Microsoft typically supports an operating system for a minimum of 10 years after its release, Windows 8 has been considered a "prior service pack" ever since Windows 8.1 was released in 2013. Prior service packs are only supported for 24 months once a new service pack is released.
"Unlike service packs that are typically just a collection of fixes, Windows 8.1 has new features and enhancements," Microsoft says.
Windows 8 initially received a lukewarm reception from users, who were confused about the tile-based interface and disappearance of familiar features such as the "start button." Microsoft brought the start button back and made it possible to boot up in "desktop mode" in Windows 8.1.
Users can download the upgrade from the online Windows Store.
Once Windows 8.1 has been installed, users also have the option of upgrading for free to Windows 10, released in July.

Do not upgrade to windows 10!
I regret “upgrading” (if you want to call it that) to Win 10. I got tired of the nag screens and took the plunge, to my regret. I found the Edge browser to be a total piece of crap. After being a dedicated user of Windows Internet Explorer it was the Edge browser that finally got me to download Firefox and switch to it completely.
Is there anyone still using 8?
Now we find out who’s cheese got moved.
Windows 10 gives you the option to continue using Explorer instead of Edge, which I have done. I completely agree with your assessment of Edge, however.
When I buy a computer I know it has a limited life span. I do not attempt to keep upgrading it.
Like a car, I will run it until it dies. Then get another one.
Right now I have four computers in my house. They are cheap and disposable. I keep my important stuff on external hard drives (which I back up).
I don’t think I have ever called technical support for help.
I just switched to an os that doesn’t try to revolutionize the way I use my computer.
Windows 10 was a major part of my decision to look at Macs.

It took over a year before I was able to upgrade a clients 8 machine to 8.1.

I made the mistake of finally upgrading to 10. I totally hate it! My frustration level is at 11. It is not intuitive. I have always been able to figure things out but not with 10. I will be switching to Apple computers as soon as I can afford it.
Me, and we use Fire Fox as our Browser. I just keep closing those Win 10 pop ups. We have been warned not to download from there. Step Daughter is IT professional who owns her own business. She will not recommend Win 10 to her clients.
This laptop is customized for us.
This lap top has a split system as some of hubby’s programs and mine only run on XP. His CAD program won’t run on Win 8. And since he retired from teaching computer/electronics at the local Jr. College 8 years ago, he does not have access to the yearly expensive update. And my expensive quilting programs won’t either. And I’m not shelling out $150 for a new one.
Upgraded to Linux years ago.

My Mom's laptop came with 8, and within a year it got itself into such a screwed up state that we were unable to upgrade it to 8.1. So I ripped out the hard drive, installed 7 Pro on a fresh HD, found drivers from the component manufacturers (because 7 wasn't "officially" supported on the laptop), and got it working great for her.
She's not upgrading to 10 -- she's 91, likes 7, and wants to stay with that as long as she can.

Meh. I’ve been on Win8 for a while. Sucked when I first got it, but once I had ClassicShell on it, it wasn’t too bad. I don’t do updates often, and when I do, it’s only the critical security ones. Never had any big issues with it, don’t see any point in wasting gigs of space to do all the updates
Just bought a used laptop (with Win7 on it).. was able to download Linux and the install took less than 5 minutes :D
Up and running smoothly ;^)
Wiped the Win completely off of the HD.
