'Twilight' Star Kristin Stewart on Gender Gap: Quit Complaining and Do Something
TruthRevolt ^ | Tuesday, January 26, 2016 | Sarah Fisher

"It's boring."

Actress and star of the blockbuster Twilight movie series Kristin Stewart spoke with Variety magazine about the supposed gender gap in Hollywood's paycheck.

"Instead of sitting around and complaining about that, do something," Stewart said. "Go write something, go do something."

"And that's easy to say," she continued. "Like, ****, it's hard to get movies made. It's a huge luxury. Who gets to just make movies? But that subject is just so prevalently everywhere right now, and it's boring."

"Guys make more money because their movies make more money," she added. "Let's start making more movies. It makes sense."

Yes, exactly. And more to the point, why don’t they try *working* for a living? Wait, I know — because they wouldn’t be able to sport $7000 handbags while wearing $20,000 dresses, neither of which they pay for, as they wander down the red carpet to yet another no-doubt-richly-deserved awards show, even if they weren’t nominated.

> Guys make more money because their movies make more money,

That reminds me of something Martina Navratilova once said regarding tennis — “of course there’s more depth to the men’s game, because there are more men playing”, IOW, more competitive, not to mention, the shortest men’s match is as long as the longest women’s match (exclusive of these newfangled tiebreakers).

Men will go to movie theaters filled with almost nothing but men, to see movies that appeal to men — analogous to the crowd at, say, a Rush concert, a total sausage fest.

Women like a different, and distinctly more limited, type of movie, identifying with at least some of the female on-screen dialogue, but also keeping an eye and ear on the onscreen men.

“The Bridges of Madison County” (a movie I have never seen; I might have gone had I been in a relationship, see, there are advantages to being alone from time to time) succeeded because it was, at its heart, a romance novel, correction, a heterosexual romance novel.

All the crap going on today, a POTUS who is financing terror via Iran, massive unemployment, race relations the worst they ever been, Europe being invaded by Muslim hordes, but Hollywood millionaires have to whine don’t they because their butts aren’t being kissed enough.

Actually, this actress was saying the opposite. She is saying, if women want to make more money make better movies.

It is actually refreshing.

There are few women who can make movies that guys want to see. But there are actors who make movies that fill the theaters.

She’s spot on correct. (I’m a woman, so I’m safe voicing my comment here.)

The ratio of male actors per film is much higher than for women. When it comes to the latter, Hollywood is a buyer’s market. There are so few substantive parts, even for supporting roles, that actresses are grateful to get into anything. Which means that while Leonardo DiCaprio can appear year after year after year, Amy Adams might not. (Especially as she gets older.)

Therefore, whoever pays the salaries calls the shots. Also, while there are some fine actresses around, none really have that kind of star power to command the ideal salary.

Maybe someday this will change, and there will be more films for women, but I have a feeling that men (especially white men) will continue to dominate the field. The smaller nature of TV seems to suit women better; they shine there.

Exactly

Meryl Streep may be a fine actress, and may have several Oscars under her belt, but honestly I NEVER thought: Hey, it's Meryl Streep! GOTTA see THAT movie.

Very few that are even "tolerable".

Like pogo101 on FR mentioned, "Out of Africa" may have won awards and all, but do I ever want to see it again?

No. I hated it the one time I did see it.
