You got that right with the yogurt. Yogurt is yogurt, why add anything? You can make beautiful homemade yogurt that tastes delicious alone, without adding sweetener, fresh or frozen fruit; enjoy it alone and it will do wonders for the gut flora, even as kefir or sauerkraut or kimchee does.

Many years ago, yogurt was a true health food. But the big brands took over and basically turned yogurt into a dessert category. Pretty sad because as you state, real yogurt can stand on it's own as a delicious and satisfying food. The live cultures are also great for your digestive system.

But somewhere along the line, people thought that less fat and more sugar was better. The real travesty is the "fruit on bottom" yogurts. Most of those contain high fructose syrup and more sugar than you would find in a can of soda pop.

I also like the "cream layer on top" yogurts but the only ones I can find have the fruit on bottom. Right now, I favor the whole milk version of Siggi's "Skyr" which is a very thick strained yogurt. I push some frozen blueberries in there and that will stick to my ribs until lunchtime.
