Something rubs that the wrong way for me - but I suppose no worse than a rat trap. Pull!

It doesn’t hurt the squirrel, which is why I find it so amusing. The launcher merely sends the animal a few yards through the air away from where it was launched.

Look at some of the other vids to see more versions of this concept, none of which are intended to harm the creature. Squirrels regularly jump quite far from tree to tree all the time. :)

Maybe - I suppose it is on the launcher - not getting whacked by the launcher. “Come on guys! A free snack AND a ride!”

A friend broke his hand on one of those things.

Yes. The animal is directly on the launcher when it is triggered, thereby undergoing a gradual, if sudden, acceleration from the beginning until the mechanism comes to a complete stop and the victim is then completely airborne -without suffering the sudden stop the launching mechanism undergoes.

Think about the recoil from a large shotgun, for instance. If you are properly braced for it on your shoulder from the moment you pull the trigger, you will experience the recoil but rarely will suffer even a bruise if done correctly.

Different story if the weapon is not firmly braced against you and is farther than by an inch or more. Dislocated shoulders have been known to happen in certain cases.

I was thinking how the clay target is thrown off with no damage. If I drop one to the ground - it breaks! (A clay target that is - not a squirrel!)

That reminds me of when we first moved into our house. Must have been the first week. My wife and I are at the front door with keys in hand. All of a sudden my wife is screaming bloody murder and shaking all about and I see a squirrel scamper down off of her.

We later found out that the previous owner would feed the squirrels while they sat on her shoulder!

*laugh* You might wish to let your wife know that squirrels are not known to be carnivorous, so she needn’t fear them. Here, we have the occasional small Grey Squirrel but far more of the chipmunks scampering about. They are not generally a problem, and I know of several that are relatively tame and will come up and take treats out of your hands with no problems.

I can not find the link right now, but I seem to remember a youtube vid a few years past that had the same squirrel coming back to the launcher time after time to be re-launched again and again, the general consensus being that it must really enjoy the ride.

I recall also reading an article recently that reported that when one of those circular “hamster wheels” was placed in a section of undeveloped land and a trail cam was focused on it, the researchers were amazed at how many animals came by to simply run in place on the device. The only reason they could think of as to why was because they simply relished the experience. Strange, ‘ay?
