Obama weighs executive action on Gitmo after GOP rejects closure plan
Washington Times ^ | 2-23-2016

"I'm not going to stand up here and unilaterally take any options off the table when it comes to the president's use of his executive authority," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest, venting that lawmakers are also ignoring Mr. Obama's budget proposal and his intention to fill a Supreme Court vacancy. "There is this emerging trend in Congress that has worsened in just the last few weeks. Congress is actually refusing to engage. They're refusing to consider the specific Gitmo plan."

Mr. Obama announced his long-anticipated proposal to close the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba with considerable fanfare, saying the prison undermines national security and is contrary to American values.

"For many years, it's been clear that the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay does not advance our national security," Mr. Obama said at the White House with Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and Vice President Joseph R. Biden at his side. He said extremist groups such as the Islamic State use the prison as a "recruiting tool" to foment hatred against the West.

“When Obama sends them loose, yes it becomes a recruiting tool.”

Might end up working in our favor though...maybe more of them will start campaigns here and we can finally start playing Cowboys and Jihadis.

Speaking of executive orders, when Trump runs into problems with rascally Congress and his deals aren’t working, is he going to use executive orders too?

Trump has already said he will reverse Obama's XOs. This will require new XOs, so he is going to use them for sure.

I do not see anything wrong with this. Trump clearly loves the same USA I do and I trust his XOs will advance the interests of the country. Obama hates the US and he is driving us into the trash heap.

Obama knows that our 99 year lease on Guantanamo has expired a while ago and we are nothing but month to month tenants. He is going to turn over Guantanamo to the Cubans, bet on it.

Why are the Cubans allowing us to stay?

Congress is actually refusing to engage.

There is a big difference between 'engaging' and 'appeasing' and 'submitting' like Obama wants.

I WANT, no - DEMAND!, anything Obama wants killed, squashed, trashed, ridiculed and ignored completely. I want the next President to undo ALL of his Executive Actions and Orders. I want him to go down in history as the failed results of that thing called "diversity".

They want the (ample) naval base in one piece?

Not enough muscle to throw us out. Also our presence keeps others away.

I agree. Barack Obama clearly sees American dominance as anathema to his world view, and will favor a socialist regime any time he can. First, he'll empty it out, then he'll turn it over. Legacy.

Little discussed, Guantanamo has value aside from just housing jihadis.

Lease on Guantanamo Bay Naval Base has no expiration date. It is valid for as long as we make the payment even if the Cubans do not accept the payment.

Our Dear Leader wants to close Gitmo because when it come to light what he has done behind the scenes he will be an inmate there.

So, Trump reverses all of Obama's EO's. What then?

When Trump runs into the same problems that forced Obama to revert to doing EO's, what will Trump do?

When Trump gets mad he always looks for the most direct route to solving his problem. Now I know people are inclined to say, "Yeah Trump, go man go!"

But what if he really wants something and Congress is resisting, he will do exactly as Obama does, he will force his will on the situation if he has an out to do so.

Trump has a nasty habit of skirting the law. He has lawyers who work for him who figure out this kind of stuff.

I don't see where he is going to be much different than Obama when he wants to ply his will above that of the people.

Why do I say that? Because he does not appreciate the rule of law being the Constitution.

He will ignore it at our peril, just like he did to all those illegal Polish guys who worked on Trump Tower with no proper tools and stripping live electrical wires - just because Trump did not feel like following established workplace laws.

Ya think he would not do the same as president when he already has that basic proven character flaw?

This maggot is running on empty and he is pissed his Supreme Court nominee will never see the light of day. I never saw a gay conniption fit but he is pitching one.
