Spotlight was named best picture at the 88th annual Academy Awards on Sunday night.

The drama showcasing the Boston Globe's reporting on the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal beat out The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant and Room.

"This film gave a voice to survivors, and this Oscar amplifies that voice, which we hope will become a choir that will resonate all the way to the Vatican," said producer Michael Sugar. "Pope Francis, it's time to protect the children and restore the faith."

"It's time to restore the faith."

Does anyone believe this clown wants a revival of the traditional Catholic faith?

Homosexuality THRIVES on child molestation, as you will find that most were molested as children themselves.

They’d rather we believe the “born that way” meme, so they bash the Church who would make them feel guilty about their behavior.

"Pope Francis, it's time to protect the children and restore the faith."

So, is he talking about the ones that Planned Parenthood is going to murder and harvest for body parts this year, too?

”Pope Francis, it’s time to protect the children and restore the faith.”

What the heck does he think the Church has been doing over the past couple of decades?

I watched Walking Dead.. which may be a good description of many Oscar whiners when you think of it.

(and for once that was not a misspelling !)

Yep . . . Hollywood was really dumb going up against TWD.

I haven’t watched any of the TV/Music/Movie award shows since I was a kid.

Spotlight is a legitimate bust.

If the Catholic Church didn’t earn this it would not have had an audience.

The church had it’s day in court. Unlike eccesiastical courts, it couldn’t deny children who had been raped a voice.

Does the show make girbilists out to be moral paragon which they are not? Yes. But they did shine the light on a big mess in this instance.

The proper course for the Catholic Church is not vitriol and circling the wagons. It is to make the people who were harmed whole, and to make sure this can’t happen anymore with humility.

The first time I ever heard of the movie “Spotlight” was when I heard it won an Oscar.

I agree.

What was done was morally indefensible and to pretend otherwise only makes it worse.

The Church has apologized and it should continue to do so as needed.

Transparency is the key to insuring that this never happens again.

Considering that most of the child abuse by Catholic priests were against boys and men, I’ve never understood how this never became a bad reflection on homosexuality.

If you recall, these events have usually been described as child abuse or sexual abuse just in general terms, without reference to the fact that disproportionate amounts of the crimes were homosexual.

The Church is a divine institution administered by fallible humans. Its trangressions must be exposed and atoned for. Then it goes on, chastened, and renewed in its salvific mission. Having said that, I wouldn’t spend five minutes or five cents to watch a movie that trashes the Church.

Jesus never said the Catholic Church (or any other denomination) was a divine institution. But He did say "By their fruits ye shall know them". Having said that, I wouldn't spend five minutes in a Catholic Church.

Transparency is the key to insuring that this never happens again.

Not "transparency", what's needed is justice.

Why is (Boston) Cardinal Bernard Law living a life of luxury in the vatican when he was so deeply involved in so many cover-ups?!? Why was (Los Angeles) Cardinal Roger Mahoney allowed to vote at the latest conclave, after being involved with payoffs and taking steps to keep abusing priests from facing reporting and justice? (Mahoney was thrilled that Bergoglio was elected, BTW.) It goes on and on...

These situation shows the catholic church's real stance on the matter of child abuse: protect the power of its most powerful, at all costs.
