“Conowingo Dam Bald Eagles” shows the resurgence of the bald eagle population at the Conowingo Dam in Maryland, where hundreds of bald eagles fiercely fight for the stunned fish that make it through the dam’s turbines.

Awesome video of bald eagles in the competitive hunt for fish. I drive across this dam often, located on US Route 1 in NE Maryland, crossing the Susquehanna River, and one can always can see bald eagles roosting in the trees near the Susquehanna.

I had always heard that the Dept. of the Interior, a number of years back, made an agreement with the nearby Aberdeen Proving Ground to use their vast acreage as a bird sanctuary to repopulate endangered species. Years later, one can regularly spy all kinds of big birds, including eagles, ospreys, vultures, kestrels, herons, cormorants, and the like.

My folks had a place up in Gunnison Colorado on the western slope of the Rockies, there was a trout fish hatchery on the river, it was an all you can eat buffet for the eagles, except only one dish.

I live in Port Deposit and a couple eagles use the trees in the back of my house to roost and eat their daily fish catch.

At first I thought you were complaining about the bald eagles.

What a terrific amateur nature video. As many years as I’ve lived around here and crossed this dam, I’ve never known about this seasonal phenomenon.

This guy is a talented videographer, even though he did not have the optimal filters for his difficult shots in low November light. I love the native Maryland accent with the professional announcer phrasing and tone — priceless.

I kayak Deer Creek which empties about a mile downstream from the Conowingo Dam.

A couple times, we’d paddle downstream and 2-3 bald eagle would wait for us to pass, alight off a tree, swoop past us at about 25 ft, fly for a couple hundred yards and land on a branch. Once we would pass, they would do it again for a mile or so.

Awesomely cool

Thanks. Though I will note it is a bit more sedate than the posted video (at the moment, a snoozing curled up eagle at night).

...Port Deposit....

Hi, neighbor. I live in Kent County. Even though, it’s about 20 minutes longer, I take a route to my sister’s house near Hanover, PA, that takes me through Port Deposit and over the Dam. Love seeing that town.

I just learned a few years ago about the bald eagles at Conowingo. The power company even sponsors a photo contest every year. You can see some beautiful shots at their website.

The ladies who staff the visitor’s center have come to know my face, as I frequently use the rest room on my way to visit my sister in PA. :) Conowingo Dam is about the halfway point for me for her place hear Hanover, PA.

Thanks for the ping.
