Beloved, tiny fish gets a [edit] viking funeral

This is one fish will not be seeing the other end of a septum tank.

A tiny pet fish named Peeping Tom, aptly named for his love of creepily staring at people while they were in the shower, sadly passed away after his owner's dad mistakenly moved his fish bowl into a too-shady part of the house.

You could always add some metal ... swords, axes, and the like and doll heads....that would launch a TV series and a couple of films. :)

Ha! My mom, daughter and I got one of those for free, just by wading in one of the “kills” (streams) in the Catskills a few years back. The little things swarmed all over our toesies!!!

I love this story!!!

Maybe the little guy had some lutefisk in him to get a Viking funeral.

All my goldfish, John and Paul, got were - my parents reciting the Kadish and then a long nice flush while my sister and I cried.

In our defenses, the fishies died before our sixth birthdays. Other goldfish, Mick and Keith ended up buried in old jewelry boxes, in the backyard, but they too got the Kadish. I guess my parents wanted me to know it before a real family member died, or before I read Alan Ginzberg. :)

We gave my mom a Viking send-off. She was an artist and kind of a free spirit, and she had always said she wanted to be sent off like the Vikings. So we decided we would do that for her.

Obviously we couldn’t do the whole thing (nor would we have wanted to, really) but my dad had her body cremated, and then a few weeks after her proper funeral, we had a separate get-together for her artist friends one afternoon. I made a small wooden boat, as Viking-like as I could manage, and we put a small portion of her ashes on her Viking ship and sent her down the river.

Funny thing... we did a couple of tests with pieces of random branches, and they kept drifting to the side of the river and getting snagged. So we didn’t know if it would work. But we had the boat, and all her friends were there, so we just decided to go ahead. And you know what? That little Viking ship, flaming brightly, went straight to the middle of the river like it knew what it was doing, and kept right on, all the way out of sight. I’ll never forget that.

Our daughter had a good sized goldfish, named Goldie, that lived for about 4 1/2 years. Goldie passed on a stormy afternoon and our daughter was adamantly opposed to a Swirly Burial at Sea, she wanted Goldie buried next to the cat in the yard. She met her father at the door when he got home with garden trowel, umbrella, and Goldie entombed in a plastic sandwich bag insisting that Goldie have a real funeral. My husband, good Daddy that he is, without changing out of his suit and tie went out with our daughter to bury the fish. When he asked if I was coming, I said I thought I would say my goodbyes from the breakfast room but would watch the proceedings from the window. He is a good daddy. :)

What a great story. Bless you and bless your mom.

And what a memorable send-off!

Where else could we get a great story like that, but on FR!

Every thing happens for a reason.

As a kid, it seems to make the whole cycle complete, when you have a ceremony.

He certainly is a good dad. Kids remember this stuff, maybe it might be years and years, into their adulthood, so they can feel some empathy for their own offspring, when the time comes.
