Imagine if the Pequod was a kayak, and Queequeg was a paddle...

Saw a guy kayak fishing in the swamp. He pulled up a float and a BIG aligator tried to taste his arm.

That would be scary. The whale isnt gonna hurt you.

In his post johnnyvanuck said that he set out to find the whale that had been reportedly feeding in English Bay over the last week.

...not like it was an accidental encounter.

Not for food. But humpbacks are very acrobatic and the tail looked like it was just about ready to flip them off.

This is the spear fisherman thread all over again. You are in their environment, their world, and you roll the dice when you’re in it.

That gator was bigger than any I've seen on Swamp People, just by the size of its head.

One summer morning about 10 miles north of Juneau, the wife and I anchored in 15 fathoms of saltchuck fishing for halibut when a big "whoosh" caught our attention - it was a humpback about 50 feet off our beam heading straight for our 17 footer.
No motor was running so we banged on the hull and the beast dove under the boat in the real clear water and proceeded to snag my bait - the reel went off like a siren and I yanked it from the rod holder - for a minute I had a 40 ton whale on my line, but luckily it slid off its fluke and no harm done. The Penn 49 reel was never the same after that incident.
It could have been worse if he hooked up with our anchor line, like a Nantucket sleigh ride.

He is about to be prosecuted under international law. He just doesn’t know it yet.

having been in the Everglades in a kayak I can say its really not a big deal, MOST of the time.

Every gator I’ve ever seen would either lay there sleeping or run away as soon as they saw you. Never had one do anything agressive.

Not even when I went diving in a natural spring with a 9’ gator sunning on the side. Nothing but 75’ of crystal clear 72 degree water separating us.

It’s a humpback. They eat schooling fish and krill.
