Cancelled Dish, What to do with savings?
FR | 22 April, 2016 | DrJeff

Cancelled DishTV today. I have "cut the cord" on and off for many years, and it's time again. I was paying $60/month on a discount plan and it went up to $120 for the same programming. I'm just not getting that kind of benefit from the cable channels. On a personal level, I don't see the value.

A recent article found that more than 1,000,000 [US] consumers cancelled paid TV subscriptions in 2015, according to SNL Kagan, a division of S&P Global Market Intelligence. Last year's decline was four times greater than the losses of 2014, and it represents the third consecutive overall annual drop for the industry, SNL Kagan says.

In Canada, it's similar: According to the Convergence Consulting Group, 190,000 Canadians ended their ties with traditional TV in 2015. That's an 80 per cent increase from the previous year when 105,000 people cut the cord.

According to his numbers, only 13,000 Canadians cut the cord in 2013, while in 2012 there was actually a gain of 32,000 TV subscribers.

Most expect the big drop in 2015 to be "the new normal."

I cancelled DirecTV several years ago. They begged me many times to come back. Every time they called I said no I wasn’t interested in everything “gay” on every channel all the time. They finally stopped calling me. I still get stuff in the mail from them though begging me to come back.

Couple that with the extra $2,500 you’re saving yearly from Obamacare, and you can take a nice vacation.

I look forward to the day, if it ever comes, where you can get cable channels a la carte. It’s crazy to think you have hundreds of channels which you help pay for which you never watch.

And not only that, but so much of the programming seems to be pushing homosexuality and liberalism in general, that it makes you think, why pay for all that %**T????

I would like to cut the cord too, but my wife has a hard enough time using the DirecTV remote as it is. The idea of trying to teach her how to operate any sort of streaming service is unthinkable.

The value is in not watching TV AT ALL.

If you still want to watch TV, Roku just released their new streaming stick this week (8x faster than 2014 model).

If you would rather reconnect with living, breathing humans, you may want to just take a sabbatical, instead. They also have these things called “books” that I’ve read about...

If my wife can learn how to operate an Amazon Firestick remote, then anybody can. She won't even use e-mail. We are also sharing a Netflix account with four other family members; they allow up to five.

There are also normal cable channels with advertising which will allow you to add an app free of charge. American Ride (a motorcycling history teacher) is particularly awesome.

You can invest your savings in a hobby that you really love.

Then YOU can have fun rather than watching other people having fun. It makes a huge difference in your life.

Remember, if you spend the “savings” they aren’t savings
any more.
