I am still in shock and don't know if I am doing this right. I need prayers for my almost 13 year old niece/Goddaughter. Lyssie went to the beach today and while swimming, she cut herself on something in the water. The cut was down to the bone in her leg. I am getting this information 2nd hand from my sister. It is her granddaughter and my Goddaughter. She was taken to the hospital where doctors tried to treat the wound. They somehow determined that (A) they could not completely clean it. (B) They saw a lump which could either be a tumor or bone cancer. They did not take her mother out of the room to say this. They told the mother right in front of my Goddaughter. They said she needed an orthopedic surgeon and they didn't have one. Or one on call. (Indian River Hospital (Vero Beach, FL) They closed up the wound with a "soft bandage" which is supposed to make it easier to go back in and get to. I don't understand why they could not completely irrigate it to clean it up. She can end up with an infection as she still had sand and stuff in there. How does a hospital not have an ortho dr on call. They told her mother to bring her back on Monday to see the orthopedist.

Also, I posted this just last week to another FReeper: I’m 36 with three kids seven and under. My final diagnosis (it took seven months!) was epithelial sarcoma, but that was after telling several very good docs no. Get second, third, and even fourth opinions. Insist that your slides are sent to multiple facilities. Don’t accept the first pathologist’s diagnosis. Be your own advocate. If a doc doesn’t want to send out your slides, find another doc. I pray that this isn’t even an issue and that you don’t have cancer, but if it is you can handle it.

Thank you. Are there any doctors on here that can explain the doctors decisions? I’m also worried about my sister, she has a heart condition and her daughter is being a beotch because my sister called me and her son. The mother lives a very dysfunctional lifestyle and there are a lot of tensions running high. My niece(the mother) acts like it is just a cut. I’m sorry, I’m in shock. I believe in the power of prayer. Just don’t know all the facts and it is terrifying.

This is what would be important, ASAP — where they have more specialists as well as more advanced equipment to help her.

That is a big part of the problem. As I responded earlier, Her mother is acting like it is nothing. I’m in NY, My sister is in NC and my niece is in FL. The mother refuses to take her to another hospital. She just wants to wait til Monday. I am praying that if it is cancer, this was God’s way of getting to it fast.

My sister did say, if it is cancer she will take her to Miami herself and take her to St. Jude. They have a children’s hospital there.
