If Jupiters mass were say about a thousand times greater that it is it would have been a star. As it is however ol’ Jupiter is a kind of cosmic short stop. His big mass pulls in all kinds of stuff that would otherwise come smashing into us-most of the time. Some stuff does slip by but all in all we wouldn’t be here on our little planet if it weren’t for the old King Of The Planets.

Juno did its first orbital flyby of Jupiter yesterday. Should have some cool images in the next few weeks. Then in October they’re going to put Juno into an even tighter orbit.

I dunno. I always thought Io looks kinda like an orange that was stuck behind the fridge too long.
