"Mountain Dance" Astonishing Orchestral Version, Dave Grusin on Piano
Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra ^ | Dave Grusin

Posted on 09/03/2016 1:38:22 PM PDT by Steely Tom

This is simply the best piece of music I've heard in thirty years. Absolutely awesome.

Note Mr. Grusin's quotation from In The Mood in his solo riff, at 3:12.

Note also his (possible) mistake at the end of his closing arpeggio (at 6:04), which he then repeats, as if to say, "yeah, I made a mistake, and even my mistakes are terrific!"

This is so good it moved me to tears.

The violin soloist is Mark O'Connor.

I am certain Henry Mancini would have absolutely loved this, and I hope he heard it in Heaven.

Meh.
Gershwin, it's not.
Brubeck, it's not.

Barry Manilow for the win (category: elevator music)

It reminds me of Mangione’s Cannonball Run theme.

It reminds me of Mangione’s Cannonball Run theme.

Yes, I too noticed elements of Mangione in it, particularly the bass line, which is prominent at the beginning, starting at 0:23.

The addition of the orchestra wrecks the simplicity of a beautiful piece. Listen to Dave Grusin on the piano on the JVC cut.

I know the original piece well, and have listened to it many times.

To me, it's a little too familiar. Nothing against it; anything by Grusin is aces in my book.

But this version is a wonderful reinterpretation, revealing potential I never knew existed. I believe (but am not sure) that the arrangement is by Mr. Grusin himself, so if it is wrecked, it is wrecked by the composer.

Dave Grusin was born in 1934, and this performance took place in 2014, when he was 79 years old.

Rather like someone trying to improve on “Take Five”, but I was pleased to be reminded of Mr. Grusin.

No one could improve "Take Five."

That is not a complement.

A friend of mine swears by Grusin’s My Bodyguard score. I don’t remember it, but I should look it up.

He did the music for the television show The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.
I actually have the cd by the same title since I am a collector of swingin’ 60’s spy themes.

I have the album and I’ve been a Grusin fan for years. He has one hell of a resume.

There are also classical versions of mountain or Mountain King: In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Greig.

Yeah, he wrote the theme music for a few other shows as well:
