Propitiation means to appease or placate. In the scriptural context it means to placate the wrath of God because of sin. Jesus propitiated the wrath of God for our sin by his death (blood) on the cross. Jesus is not the mercy seat. The mercy seat was the place where God was propitiated by the sprinkling of blood; the death of Jesus.
