PORTLAND (ChurchMilitant.com) - The man who fined an Oregon Christian bakery $135,000 for refusing to bake a wedding cake for a lesbian couple has lost his run for public office, losing to his Republican opponent. It's the first time a Republican has won a statewide office in Oregon since 2002.
Brad Avakian's rise to national prominence began when a lesbian couple filed a complaint to the Oregon Department of Justice back in 2013 when Aaron and Melissa Klein, Christian owners of Sweet Cakes bakery, declined to make a cake for a gay wedding. Brad Avakian, then Commissioner of Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries, oversaw the case when he handed down the crippling fine against the Kleins.
Prior to the ruling, Avakian had a history of close ties to homosexual activism. In fact, Avakian met with Basic Rights Oregon, a gay advocacy group, on numerous occasions, even going as far as to purchase tickets costing hundreds of dollars for the group's annual fundraising galas and gay pride parades.
When Avakian handed down the fine he also ordered the Klein's never to publicly discuss "not wanting to bake cakes for same-sex weddings based on their Christian beliefs."
Avakian told the Oregonian in 2013, "The goal is never to shut down a business. The goal is to rehabilitate."
In a different case, Avakian handed down a $400,000 fine because the owner of the Twilight Room Annex did not want his establishment to be known as a "gay bar."
Avakian's opponent, Republican Dennis Richardson, won 48 percent of the popular vote, beating Avakian by nearly 100,000 votes.
Avakian ran for Secretary of State on a radically progressive platform, with endorsements by Basic Rights Oregon Equality PAC, Planned Parenthood PAC of Oregon, and NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon PAC.
In most of the individual states, the Secretary of State is an administrative officer responsible for various governmental functions based on an individual state's constitution.

Conservatives’ goal with the vote is to rehabilitate the scum of society. Take that Avakian.
Yet the Democrats charge head-on with their divisive identity politics and can't imagine why the rest of the country voted for Donald Trump.
I know that there is a communist psychopath leader of the Revolutionary Communist Party named Bob Avakian (possibly from California).
Does anyone know if they are related?
Because he appeals to the need for union between the people of the United States, not destroying heretics like the liberals do.
