I have “mint” on a usb drive and can boot to it and see the hard drive from there. That way you don’t have to have a bunch of adapters.

Yeah, I would have mentioned that too, but he said the laptop was dead so I thought it may have been a power issue or circuit board issue and thus the laptop wasn't bootable.

Use “Youtube Video and Audio Downloader” - an extension for firefox mac - likely for other platforms and browsers. Works as advertised.

If you just want music, you can still get it from Youtube (as far as I know). Video is completely optional, but music is easy.

Download and install Any Video Converter Free. It will allow you to download Youtube videos in MP3 format (or convert downloaded videos to MP3), which is playable on practically all music devices.

If you want to keep them as videos, the program will allow you to convert the downloads to MP4 or WMV. You may have to mess with the size and bitrate, but many of the formats have good defaults so you should be able to pick one for your device (or VLC) and play it easily.

I’ve done it before, and I rarely use VLC since I can convert the format to something Windows Media Player can handle.

I use VIDEO DOWNLOADER, which was free as part of a package of programs when I bought Nero Platinum. Works very well. It can download videos in different formats, and can convert music videos to MP3 while it downloads (I'm referring to those "music videos" that are really audio with still photos added). It is certainly compatible with VLC (at least some of the formats are). I usually burn downloaded videos to a DVD and play them on my Blu-ray players.
