They’ve got a nice one a lot like this on Hallmark Mysteries. I’m used to just a closeup of a log, but this new one also shows the mantle and presents.

I never even heard about sitting around watching a log until the 2000s.

Christmas of 1980 my ship was in dry dock at the former Brooklyn Navy Yard. I had the duty as Duty OPS on Christmas Eve. After being relieved Christmas morning the Communications Officer and I went back to one of the two houses set aside for the officers.

Someone had left the WPIX Yule log going on the TV. We sat down to watch a while. After a few minutes I said, "This isn't right." I got up and moved the TV into the empty fireplace. John said, "Much better."

A few minutes later the XO walked by, looked at the TV in the fireplace and muttered, "I don't want to know about it," before heading upstairs.

"Ceterum censeo Islam esse delendam."

Yule was originally a pagan celebration to Oden and Thor...

Until it got "baptized" around the 12th century, eventually coming to represent the 12 days of Christmas.

I grew up in Western/Southern Tier of NY and our TV system would carry WPIX and WWOR so NYC news was like local to us. I do remember mom tuning into the WPIX Yule Log year in and year out. Special memories.
