Sinkhole in Michigan

FRASER, Mich. (AP) - A sinkhole forming north of Detroit forced the Christmas Eve evacuations of more than a dozen homes and the closure of a busy roadway that was expected to collapse due to a possible sewer problem.

Police and firefighters were called to the neighborhood in Fraser about 6 a.m. Saturday after a homeowner called authorities and said his house was sinking.

"You can hear the basement walls cracking, so we evacuated that family right away," Fraser Public Safety Director George Rouhib told The Macomb Daily in Mount Clemens. "The house is getting worse - the bricks are falling off the side, the sidewalk is lifting."

Traffic along 15 Mile Road also was diverted. An underground camera was being used to view any damage to a major sewer line below the road.

I was worried that this was near our favorite restaurant.

We now live 600 miles from it but are back home for Christmas and are going there Wednesday.

It’s a mile away so we’re ok.

Sad for the families involved.

“Did Michael Moore trip over his own fat feet?”.....

They were reporting about a “sink hole”, not an “a$$hole”

I drove by that area today on Utica Rd. and I play volleyball at the senior center located at that spot and I also have a couple of friends directly in that area. I'm certain they are in no danger but there may be a power outage for many folks due to the downed power lines.

15 mile rd. is a major 4 lane highway and it's going to be quite a while before they get things fixed up to allow thru traffic..........

I feel real bad for the families involved. Imagine, Christmas of all days to see your home destroyed in such a manner.........

The backstory on this is interesting. This same sewer failed near this location. The repair costs were measured in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Macomb County water bills get an extra surcharge, instead of everyone in the region chipping in, because Macomb did not do the proper video inspections of the pipe. Looks like they did not learn a thing.

Sad for the families involved.

Families were exiting with their Christmas packages. What would you take? So sad.

Friends of mine had their home burn down in the San Bruno fire a few years back. One of the first three to go in the fire, they lost everything. Even their safe containing jewelry melted and burned to ashes. They were away at a restaurant, invited at the spur of the moment by friends just before it happened. They went through much grief losing everything. Wouldn't wish this on anyone.

Aren’t these areas checked by geologists before any building is allowed to proceed?

Sewer line failure! Hydraulic action is the result.
It doesn’t sound like a geological fault, IMOH.

This same sewer failed near this location.

Several miles west in Sterling Heights.

The repair costs were measured in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Macomb County water bills get an extra surcharge, instead of everyone in the region chipping in,

Who in the region are you referring to? This was a Macomb County problem, not Oakland, not Wayne, not Lapeer and not St. Clair.

because Macomb did not do the proper video inspections of the pipe. Looks like they did not learn a thing.

With the exception of the homes that were destroyed, which is truly unfortunate, if they had done the proper inspections and found the problems which have been lying dormant for years, that entire stretch of highway would have had to been dug up and reinforced at a cost of what? More than the hundreds of millions that you quoted above.............

Sometimes a sinkhole can be caused by an underground leak rather than a pre-existing geological problem, especially if there is a way that moving water can gradually remove soil.

Good question for which I have no informed answer. It seems that construction of buildings, railroads, bridges and highways has more in-depth research/investigation related to water tables, rock formation, flooding potential etc., not so sure about prior decades.

In many cities there are old, rusting bridges over rivers and unused railroad tracks which seem to be standing the test of time - well they are not falling down YET!!!!!
