Also, we have family overseas and the call will come thru as “out of area” on the land line. I have to answer. :/

I have been using a mobile phone exclusively for about 10 years now.

I am getting more of those hang up calls and spam calls. I recently installed an app called Truecaller. It intercepts some of the major spammers and flashes a red screen. Other times I get calls from numbers not in the Truecaller list. For those, I just do not answer if I do no recognize the number. I do check them in Google.

My former health insurance company called occasionally. Sometimes it was from an unrecognized number. They would leave a voice mail if I did not answer.

You can look up those phone numbers on Google and see what other people are saying about them.

With that being said, you can block the ones you've received on your smart phone but that doesn't guarantee the future new ones........

Here is a tactic. Record a new voice mail using SIT (special information tones) from this web page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_information_tones

You want to use the Intercept or IC tones

While you are recording your voice mail message, start recording, play the tones twice and then give your normal greeting. Text your contacts and let them know that you are having some problems with the phone company but if they get your voice mailbox, go ahead and leave a message anyway. Answer only those calls that you know and let all others go to voice mail.

The tones tell the auto dialer at the telemarketer, that your line is no longer in service. Normally, after 1 to 3 attempts at calling your number, they will remove your number from their database. If you are being hounded by several telemarketing firms, it can take a couple of months but you should see a rapid drop off after a week or two.

It happens on my Iphone. I just use Do Not Disturb and then only allow calls from Favorites if it gets too bad. Unwanted calls go straight to voicemail.

“Rachel from credit card services” is pretty common.

Yes it is, twice a week. Last time they called I pressed one for a live person, when they answered I said "I'm on my way to your kids school, you'll never see them again." and hung up.

I have gotten a lot of those IRS calls too. I dog those guy's out something terrible. The IRS calls usually come from Arabs, so I usually insult allah to piss them off. Then I will call back repeatedly until they just disconnect the number. It takes about an hour and between thirty and forty calls to make them nuke their number. I figure that way any messages they left with others before me was nothing more than a waste of their time.

As a side note, the majority of the calls I get are from companies wanting to sell me extended warranties on my leased car.

The only way they could have gotten my number is thru either the dealership I leased my car from or the finance company my lease is thru............

Don’t answer a number you don’t recognize. If it’s a legitimate call they’ll leave a message and callback number.

These out of area hangup calls are just building a list of cell phone numbers that actually answer, which they turn around and sell to telemarketers.

Getting these calls all the time. Tried blocking them, now I just let it ring or reject it. Doubtful ATT will do anything about it without making ME jump through a dozen hoops. Not worth the hassle.

I like telling them that I need to answer the doorbell-please hold. Then see how long they wait before hanging up. Time is money for them.

Sounds like a real human, except the robot talks on and on even if you say “No, I’m not interested”. Then again I get a lot of these kinds of calls from Minnesota area codes (either about an auto warranty or a “free cruise”). I one time asked “Are you a robot?”
Surprisingly I got the answer “No”, in a rather bitchy tone. So maybe it’s some Minnesota drone who can do no more than read from a script.

These are phone bank callers who are routing the calls through the internet so they give false caller ID #s in order to hide and harass people for services and money.

They’re scam artists working out of boiler room operations, many of which are offshore. It doesn’t matter if you’re on the do not call list, they have worked an illegal way around that and they stay anonymous. They’re very, very persistent. They put your number into a robocall system and the calls go out automatically. The operator is not doing any of the dialing and they only come on if you answer with a voice, not a voice mail recording. It’s a heck of a racket preying on people who don’t know better. They have a million different schemes.

Until something is done on a national level to stop them, all we can do is hang up and ignore them.

The do not call registry is useless.

The majority of BS calls I get, from various cities around the country, is to tell me my credit is good. Every time I block that number, another call comes with the same screed, my credit is good. That’s nice to know but enough is enough.

You can look up any number here and see how many comments there are about it. I have called myself sometimes, according to the caller ID! Spammers are scum.

It takes about an hour and between thirty and forty calls to make them nuke their number.

These calls are routed through the internet to give you a false and usually non-existent caller ID# It does no good to call them back or report them to the phone Co or authorities.

I have noticed traveling between Ft Bragg and Wash DC areas that the spam callers usually have the area code from the area I am currently located in - but they are still Indian or East Europeans to the best of my guessing.

I have hundreds of these types of calls logged and tagged as spam. These scumbags just spoof another number everyday and call back. They use Skype so you can’t trace who’s calling. The number I have was used by some deadbeat and I get debt collectors calling me several times a week.

Save the numbers. You may get a surprise. I received a notice of legal action about a class action lawsuit against one of these companies. If I win the lawyers will get a lot of money and maybe I’ll get a couple pennies.
