How Does One Get an AK-47 or Similar Rifle in Canada? (Quebec City Mosque shooting)

Perhaps one of you Canadian Freepers can answer this: How difficult is it for someone in Canada to have an AK-47 or similar rifle in his possession? I was under the impression that it was basically impossible.

Reason for this question is that the alleged suspect in the Quebec Mosque shooting is reported to have had an AK-47 or similar rifle in his possession.

From the UK Daily Mirror:

He was armed with two weapons resembling AK-47s and at least one handgun, and there were fears the car was rigged with explosives, Le Soleil reported.

They probably have some laying around at your local mosque.

Is your question about legally acquiring an AK-47?
Because jihadists don’t pay attention to gun laws.
France has strict gun control laws and the jihadists there were using full-auto AK’s that are not even legal in the US.
I’m pretty sure explosives are illegal as well.

I don’t mean for organized terrorists owning such weapons. I mean like the alleged “lone wolf” suspect to one (or more as has been reported).

“He was armed with two weapons resembling AK-47s...”

Most “journalists” would not know the difference between an AK and a lever action Winchester.

I don’t know the gun laws in Canada, but I suspect AK’s would be difficult to acquire legally.
People who are planning mass murder, even if lone wolves, aren’t particularly interested in complying with laws.

For a rifle, you need to first take a class then obtain a license to purchase.

A handgun is considered "restricted" and you need to take another class and obtain another license......

Bottom line, legally, firearms are easy to buy........But it's apparent it's even easier to obtain one illegally.

How difficult is it for someone in Canada to have an AK-47 or similar rifle in his possession? I was under the impression that it was basically impossible. Ask Obama's thug former Attorney General, Eric Holder. He can give you a run down on how that works.

There does not seem to be an “alleged suspect” for the mosque shooting. From what I have read, they have a defendant who has allegedly confessed to the shooting.

"A Canadian citizen is allowed to buy guns in USA?"

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Canadian gun laws are ridiculously complicated, but if I'm understanding them correctly, AK-47's are "prohibited weapons," which means you aren't legally allowed to own one unless perhaps you owned it before the law was passed.

Oddly, AR-15s are "restricted weapons," meaning that you can own one if you can convince the government to issue you a permit. Only 5 round magazines allowed, though, I think.

You are correct. If it was a AK-47, it would have been an illegal purchase as no AK or variant (with the exception of the Chi-com Type 81) can be legally purchased here in Canada. Now, since we’re living in liberal hell and everything from a pellet gun on up is an AK-47, we’ll have to attend the actual press conference where the police will no doubt hold the thing proudly by the trigger guard while sweeping the press gallery and denouncing Trump.

Yes, on the subject of alleged perpetrator(s) the current situation is lone wolf in custody, scattered political interests generally more to right than left but confusing mixture of interests, lingering questions outside of official media/political circles about role of possible other suspect(s) whose roles changed to witness, one thing known is that the suspect belonged to a gun club and had some hunting experience although was also a bird-watcher.

By the way, from Quebec City one would not cross a river at the Maine border that would be folks from New Brunswick. In fact, I would think if I were looking to cross the border to shop for anything, while Maine is a bit closer, I would head to St Johnsbury, VT as the nearest large town. You would have to drive all the way through Maine to reach any populated areas.

Criminal gangs in Canada have lots of high powered weapons, the black market for them appears to be robust.
