Royal Caribbean's next cruise ship will be the biggest of all time

Royal Caribbean’s newest vessel - Symphony of the Seas - will be the world’s largest cruise ship when it is delivered in April 2018, the cruise line confirmed today.

At 1,188 feet long and 215 feet wide, the new 16-deck ship will weigh 230,000 GT (gross tonnage), nearly 3,000 more than the current record holder, another Royal Caribbean ship, Harmony of the Seas.

At the time Fox News “wasn’t available”. Certainly not banned. No big deal since I don’t watch much TV other than background noise, but CNN International was a wakeup. The Americans (no mention of our allies) were slaughtering their way through Iraq. Can’t imagine what I’d hear today. The Bush guy was responsible.

We've been on several Carnival Cruises and loved them. What's not to like? There are free 24hr restaurants everywhere, a pools and sunbathing on the upper decks, some type of free musical every evening, and a magic show in a small theater near the stern or some-such-thing to top it off. The only problem are the formal dinners which break up the day, but blow them off. You'll never go hungry.

Our last cruise was to the Canadian Maritimes out of NY Harbor. The first night out, I found myself in the steam bath drinking ice water looking out a picture window watching the sun set over the North Atlantic while listing to Pavarotti sing Nessun Dorma piped in over the sound system. Not bad, $600 for two for an inside cabin for five nights, I thought.

I was asking WENDLE about his cruise, which he spent in his room watching Fox News. I still don’t understand to what you are responding. If you and WENDLE are married, or otherwise intimate, I had no way of knowing.

So I stroll on up to the Promenade Deck, and what do I see but a hockey game going on!

I run back to the cabin and get my stick because you never know when you might come across a hockey game.

I run back to the game and join in and this goon on the other team starts running her mouth at me, so I give her a little slash. You know, nothing big just probably less than a hundred stitches so I say it’s a minor and not a major.

Well, the Captain comes and accuses me of beating up little old ladies and I told him , “Hey! She shouldn’t have got in the game if she wasn’t ready to play with the big boys.”

Then he tells me it’s some game called Shuffleboard or something.

Must be one of those Bahamian games like cricket.

So they march me down to the brig and toss me in there and let me tell you, “Resort Style Accomodations” evidently don’t apply to the brig.

The Captain comes and tells me they’re going to drop me off at the next port and that’s exactly what they did doing 25 knots as I sailed off the poop deck.

Fortunately, a fishing boat picked me up.

That was my lucky stick, too.

I leave my cabin for five minutes and when I return, I have fresh fruit, mints on the bed and everything cleaned up.

Wash your hands every hour or so. There are bathrooms everywhere. Be compulsive, obsessive about washing your hands. Just do it. In ten months, I never got sick. Virtually EVERY other person (in the crew) got sick sometime.

Good advice anytime a person is among loads of other people.

I served on a carrier (FDR) for two years. When aircraft and squadron personnel were aboard, there were about 5,000 of us on a ship originally built for 4,000.

We never had an outbreak of lower tract disorders, other than some isolated cases after liberty in the Med countries due to excessive drinking and bad food. That was a nine month “cruise”, not just a week or two.

I had an email tonight from our friend. He was admonishing me for being a cheap skate. He wanted me to go first class and travel in lavish luxury. He is probably right. I am a poor man but I am a happy man. I never cruise in a rabbit hutch.
