Study finds colorectal cancer rates have risen dramatically in Gen X and millennials

A new study finds that compared to people born around 1950, when colorectal cancer risk was lowest, those born in 1990 have double the risk of colon cancer and quadruple the risk of rectal cancer.

The study is led by American Cancer Society scientists and appears in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. It finds colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence rates are rising in young and middle-aged adults, including people in their early 50s, with rectal cancer rates increasing particularly fast. As a result, three in ten rectal cancer diagnoses are now in patients younger than age 55.

Overall, CRC incidence rates have been declining in the United States since the mid-1980s, with steeper drops in the most recent decade driven by screening. Recently though, studies have reported increasing CRC incidence in adults under 50, for whom screening is not recommended for those at average risk. However, these studies did not examine incidence rates by 5-year age group or year of birth, so the scope of the increasing trend had not been fully assessed.

"Trends in young people are a bellwether for the future disease burden," said Siegel. "Our finding that colorectal cancer risk for millennials has escalated back to the level of those born in the late 1800s is very sobering. Educational campaigns are needed to alert clinicians and the general public about this increase to help reduce delays in diagnosis, which are so prevalent in young people, but also to encourage healthier eating and more active lifestyles to try to reverse this trend."

First, I'm no doctor, but I think there are different risk factors for colon cancer vs rectal cancer. Certain sexual practices increase the risk of rectal cancer, for example.

Second, this states that rates have escalated back to the level for people born in the late 1800s, but then the recommend remedy is healthier eating. Well, there was no fast food, highly processed food, or "scary" GMO foods back in the late 1800s. However, there was something missing from food then, that was in food for several decades, but in recent years has been removed in many cases. Preservatives! That's right, folks, what if preservatives are good for us? Humans are basically walking hunks of meat after all.

I would love to see this hypothesis tested. If true, the food Nazis' heads would explode. Imagine if progress and technology made food better and safer than it is in its natural state. I don't know about you, but I would much rather eat bread brimming with preservatives than bread rich with mold spores.

For that matter, maybe all the cellulose and other fiber boosters being added to foods is irritating the colon. Some of this fake fiber is pretty close to wood splinters.

I like to have fun with this stuff. So many notions about food and diet are accepted as gospel and never tested, when nothing should be assumed just because it sounds good.

That’s the spirit!

Art Donovan lived well into his eighties, and he lived on processed meat and taters.

Dunno if this is just a American phenom, or across the globe in general. It would be nice to see studies on that.

For rectal cancer, yes, but colon cancer has multiple causes, including a genetic factor.

Its from anal sex. Everyone knows this but no one wants to discuss it. The tissues in the rectum and colon are totally unprepared for std viruses.

I think you deserve a government grant and a year’s supply of bacon to study this interesting theory. I’ll be happy to be one of your assistants.

Are the incidence rates for the GenX/Millenials broken down by sex?

I'm guessing among the young'uns, that many more women engage in receptive anal sodomy, than the men.

I think you are on to something. I recall reading exactly your thesis that food preservatives are beneficial to longevity quite some time ago. I believe large, long-term studies were done.

It’s modern pesticides rather than preservatives or should I say the lack thereof.

People who eat organic are more likely to ingest foods with mycotoxin contamination from the lack of modern pesticides and anti fungal treatments on seeds. GMO grains have the lowest rate of mycotoxin contamination.

Plus rampant STDs and perverse sexual habits.

Anybody honestly taken a look at Millennials lately?

Almost all of them are obese and borderline morbidly-obese.

Add to that the mental deficiencies they have due to drugs, technology, and a lack of basic social skills and you’ve got a recipe for literal Zombies.
