Study: Majority of Cancer Mutations Caused by Random DNA Copying Errors

While environmental and inherited factors have well-known roles in cancer development, a new study provides evidence that a third, and until this point scientifically undervalued factor, is at the root of nearly two-thirds of cancer-causing mutations: random and unpredictable errors that occur in normal DNA replication.

Cells are constantly regenerating, and every time a healthy cell divides, there are about three random mistakes or mutations in the copied DNA. Most of the time these copying errors are harmless. However, occasionally they occur in a cancer driver gene, which is just “bad luck,” study author Bert Vogelstein, M.D., co-director of the Ludwig Center at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, said at a press conference about the research.

Using a new mathematical model based on DNA sequencing and epidemiologic data from countries around the world, the paper, published March 24 in Science, is the first to calculate how many of the mutations found in cancers are due to environmental factors, heredity, or these random DNA copying errors.

Overall, when looking at 32 cancer types, the researchers, including Cristian Tomasetti, Ph.D., assistant professor of biostatistics, found that about 66 percent of the total mutations are due to random DNA copying errors, 29 percent are due to environmental factors, and the remaining 5 percent are caused by inherited factors. ... “These cancers will occur no matter how perfect the environment,” Vogelstein said in a prepared statement.

That doesn't mean we can throw caution to the wind, but it is important for people to realize that illness happens and we don't have as much control over health as we think. As people age, the body falls apart. Whether it's heart attack or cancer or something else, everybody eventually succumbs to something.

This is exactly why I eat foods with preservatives in them. I want preserved. It's GMO foods all the way for me.

Talk show host Bill Cunningham needs to hear this. He has claimed that illness doesn't just happen; and if you get sick, it's your fault. At least three times, I've turned his show off in disgust when he tries to establish some sort of moral equivalence between people who get sick and drunk drivers.

Interesting you say that.

I’ve noticed that, in the rooms of Narcotics Anonymous, heroin people look like hell, but the cocaine people.... they always look about 10 years younger than they should.

I think cocaine preserves you, like formaldehyde.

Or that the “cure for cancer” is being hidden by big pharma. There is no single cure because there is no single cause.

oops
Dr. Seyfried

Cancer as a metabolic disease
Fed by sugar (glucose and the amino acid glutamine)
Use ketogenic diet, exogenous ketones and hyperbaric oxygen in treatment
Prevent by supporting autophagy with water fasting

I’ve known people that have thought that if they eat veggies, avoid meat and don’t smoke that they’re immune to cancer. I told them cancer is cells gone crazy and you’re lucky if you can catch it early and have it removed.

As genetic errors are cumulative, the human race will not last another 10,000 years. Science is a bitch...

...

Of course not. My understanding is that a healthy immune system can kill cancer cells.

Who’s to say some of those errors won’t eventually mutate back the other way?

Hey, I think preservatives are great! Ditto for GMO. Humans are basically big walking hunks of meat, so why not do all we can to preserve ourselves? For all the talk about the evils of processed food, the food supply must be OK because people are living longer and being healthier in old age than ever.

There are many like that. Healthy living has become a religion. There was an article in the WSJ about some guy who exercises 4-6 hours a day, and pushes his family to emulate him. He also eats and drinks these odd concoctions that probably taste awful. It reminds me of medieval monks whipping themselves to do penance.

When something bad happens, people want to find a cause so they can protect themselves from such a fate. If you live a “good” life, once meaning you lived a righteous life, you were blessed with health and prosperity. People still want to believe the same thing, except they now put their faith in vegetables and exercise.

Exactly. One of our sons is a cancer researcher and he has said this many times.

Amen. There is no escape from the perils of living in a fallen world.
