NHL Hockey Expansion Protected Lists are Released for Vegas
NHL.com ^ | 6/18/17 | NHL

The list of protected and unprotected players of each NHL team is out. See link. The new Vegas team, the Golden Knights, can pick one player or goalie from each of the 30 existing teams according to some rules. And there will be trading in the draft on Weds as well. Interrresting.

Airborne, I am going to use the hockey ping list but if that is a faux pas, please let me know. I apologize in advance.

I'd say Fleury will be in net in the desert...

Ping to the list of available NHL players for Vegas. What do you all think?

How are they going to schedule a league with 31 teams. Isn’t NHL talent already thin enough as it is?

I was thinking that last year, but now I’m looking at the available roster, and if the Vegas management plays it well, they will have quite a team.

He has accepted, but likes to follow his coach. He has a few more games, if not seasons in him. Bitter sweet!

Las Vegas will be lucky to have a great goalie and great locker room leadership like MAF.

I’m waiting for Newtown to get their own NHL hockey team. This would prevent me from going to Madison Square Garden to see the NYR. Where do the NYI play again? Brooklyn? Insanity.

Hockey was much better when there were 21 teams. With the added Russians and Europeans, 24 would be good. As you said, 31 means talent is spread way too thin. There is more talent than ever, it is just a shame it isn’t more concentrated. It will make Las Vegas a little more fun to visit though.

I’ll say this...Las Vegas will be as successful as Phoenix, which is rumored to go to 3 places, Seattle, Quebec or Hartford.

If Vegas puts a decent product on the ice they’ll be successful. The Yotes have 2 major problems. 1 - they stink, they’ve missed the playoffs most seasons, usually functionally eliminated by the allstar break. 2 - they’re in Scottsdale, that’s a far north suburb of Phoenix, an extra hour away from Tucson and a solid hour away from most of Phoenix, that’s a tough commute to ask for on an NHL schedule (the Cardinals make it work, but 8 homes games a year mostly on Sunday is very different than 41 a year scattered). Early on when the Yotes were merely mediocre and downtown they got the fans, then the quality dropped, then they moved, and now nobody wants to own them.

Hockey was much better when there were 21 teams.

Agreed. However, at one point there were 16 playoffs teams out of 21 teams going to the playoffs, and the team with the best winning percentage rarely won the Stanley Cup. I had jokingly suggested that they should have had 20 teams make the playoffs so we can play 82 games so one team can feel REALLY BAD.

I don't like that the most important hockey is played in June. Either shrink the playoffs, or shorten the regular season. It should end where there could conceivable be snow on the ground in the original six cities.

I completely agree with you but I don’t foresee June hockey disappearing because it has been going on so long now it seems entrenched. It would require daring and vision to shrink the season. That is not how I see the NHL leadership.

We are longtime Avs fans (just admitting that proves the point) and so we might go to the Golden Knights opener in Vegas.

By the way, Airborne, I can’t tell you which player or which location, but I have a friend in real estate who last week was walking through the lovely home of a man to prepare for the sale. My friend knows nothing about hockey, but she saw a photo of her client with the Stanley Cup (!), so she mentioned this to me. And I figured out who her client was and she confirmed. I was flipping out in total awe!!!! He was showing her around his bedroom, everything. I have zero star craziness for actors and even singers. Was born in Hollywood and grew up surrounded. But one of my favorite hockey players... ARE YOU KIDDING ME. Lol.

Actually the Coyotes never moved to Scottsdale. They moved from sharing an arena downtown with the Suns to Glendale on the far west side. Most of the fan-base is in East valley and Scottsdale. The original proposal to build an arena in old town south Scottsdale probably would have been great for the team and fans. Maybe not so much for taxpayers. One of my favorite hockey games ever was watching Jeremy Roenick skate with the police and fireman beer league during the NHL lockout. I heard a rumor he would be at a local rink about 11:30 PM to skate. Maybe there were 30 people watching. He didn’t take any shots that I remember but those players had great memories receiving perfect passes in front of the net.

Disagree. Vegas has a better chance of becoming a hockey town.

But we shall see.

You’re pretty close by. Don’t you work right downtown? From here it is not too unreasonable to see the Ducks or Kings.
