Reporters at the New York Times could soon be vulnerable to the ax. If the ongoing round of voluntary buyouts being offered to editing staff does not get enough takers, the Gray Lady could begin another round, NYT Executive Editor Dean Baquet recently warned his top department editors.
Up until now, the company had not indicated that layoffs would happen if targeted numbers werent achieved, Grant Glickson, president of the NewsGuild, told Media Ink.
As part of the NYTs ongoing restructuring of its editing ranks, 109 copy editors have had their jobs eliminated. There are estimated to be about 50 new jobs available in the restructured editing operation that the Times envisions for its digital- and video-oriented future.
When the downsizing was first revealed in late May, a memo from Baquet and Managing Editor Joe Kahn portrayed the cuts as a streamlining of the editing process and indicated that some of the savings would be used to hire up to 100 more journalists.

Nice to go into the weekend on a high note!
:) :) :)
“Reporters”? I thought they were “journalists”. Reporters report the news as it is, “journalists” report things as they see them....
Ah, The Times. Always an embarrassment. Soon to be a weekly tabloid...and an embarrassment to tabloids everywhere.
If they fire editors, their use of English might become less than stellar! /dripping sarcasm
That restructuring is going to continue to be "ongoing" until this bird cage liner of a paper stops sounding like an extreme liberal lunatic asylum.

The Gray Lady is dying....
Hahaha the paper that tells everyone how the world should work can’t even manage their own business...
Trying hard to grieve....BWA-HAHAHA...still trying...BWA-HAHAHA...can’t do it...BWA-HAHAHA...maybe Anthony Weiner has a position for y’all...BWA-HAHAHA...maybe Spitzer could use you...or Jim McGreevey could have an opening for you...BWA-HAHAHA!!!!
Far left wing Marxist newspapers never seem to die no matter how much money they lose.
The far left Philadelphia Inquirer and has gone through two bankruptcies and many rounds of layoffs...
But there it is every morning.
Correct. I wonder what percentage of online subscriptions are actual humans versus part of a block purchased by some leftist entity... foreign or domestic?
Good news is welcome any time.
Guess they had to fire Comey from their payroll, he appeared yesterday to receive his pink slip and final check.
The NYT, the paper of record (losses).
Do they still have the Bulletin, I liked it better than the Inquirer, as a kid.
Needs killing is a phrase sometimes heard. Applies to the slimes.
How could the poobahs of the New York Times not know this?
The downside concern for conservatives is that a smaller New York Times staff will become MORE liberal AND more dependent on Democrat Opposition Research Teams. (Opposition Research teams pay for stories and use unethical means... they're the people Times editors think of as 'sources'. )Yeah, Times editors are being played for fools and they've dumped the Public Editor... it's hopeless and Jeremy Peters is too afraid to object...
