The Eagles Turn Classic West Into A Powerful Memorial For Glenn Frey
Forbes ^ | July 16, 2017 | Steve Baltin

When the Classic West and East, two two-day concerts in Los Angeles and New York headlined by the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, were announced earlier this year, comparisons to last year’s wildly successful Desert Trip were immediate and inevitable. Like that once in a lifetime bill bringing together six iconic acts of one era, Classic West and East featured six bands from one era, in this case the ‘70s, joining together for a special bill.

That is really where the comparisons end though. Unlike Desert Trip, which was much more about the event, night one of Classic West, held at Dodger Stadium last night (July 15), was all about the headliner, the Eagles, in their first full-scale performance since the death of Glenn Frey in January of 2016.

The band, joined by Frey’s son, Deacon, and country star Vince Gill, both of whom fit in superbly, took the stage at around 8:45, opening with a harmonious “Seven Bridges Road.”

Having his son fill in for his father was a nice touch. It may have even been the reason that they got back together for this concert. Kind of sad that those you grew up listening to are now dying off. Oh well, that's life. My time is rapidly approaching.

Early in the night, Henley addressed the fact this might be the band’s last hometown show. “In case this is our last dance, we want to thank all the fans in Southern California,” he said. “It all started here in Los Angeles.”

And if tonight was indeed the finale in Los Angeles, which I doubt even the band knows at this point, so caught up in emotion, then there was no more perfect way for one of Los Angeles’ greatest bands ever to go out than singing in front of a hometown crowd, “You better let somebody love you before it’s too late.”

Hate their politics, love DH’s voice. He can sing “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” & make it awesome.

His new country album is really good.

I’m guessing Randy Meisner and Don Felder weren’t invited...

A friend of mine is a LA-based mastering engineer who I partnered with on 5-6 albums.

One album he remastered was “Hotel California”.

During that time, the studios were changing to a new type of tape that promised better sonics. Alas, after some time, the tape began to disintegrate.

Steve (the mastering engineer) literally had to “bake-the-tape” to restore the tape, albeit temporarily.

You might say those songs were 'twice baked', based on the stories surrounding the recording...

Don Henley's home town is our County seat -- and I have the privilege of knowing him personally.

Yes, we differ in our politics, but, offstage, the guy is amazing! Any cause he supports, he definitely "puts his money where his mouth is"...

And, as a public speaker, his "mouth" is amazingly powerful!

~~~~~~~~
The State of Texas has a robust program for preserving and restoring its beautiful county courthouses -- which have proved to be economic stimulli for the counties that restore theirs.
We were making our county's third (annual) attempt at getting our county government to permit the restoration of our 1861 Courthouse...
"Texas' Oldest Operating Courthouse"
Linden, Cass County, Texas
...which had been stymied twice before by a few county officials who objected to removing a 1980s addition -- "built like a trailer house"...
~~~~~~~~~

At the (third, annual) special Commissioners Court meeting on the subject, Don stood up to speak -- and, he sounded like a cross between a top Baptist preacher and a well-educated Senator!

At one point, he even pointed at me and said, "My good friend, [TXnMA] reminds me that it was Einstein who said,

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

And, one time when we were having coffee, he asked how much more we had to raise to reach our restoration funding goal -- and, when we told him ...he just reached for his checkbook...

~~~~~~~~~
Yep, as shown in his album, "Cass County" -- Don Henly is a surprisingly versatile and many-faceted guy!
But, that's just the opinion of an old classical musician who became an Eagles -- and Henley -- fan late in life...
I hope they did my favorite Eagles hits: I Told Myself, Such a Fool and Trying to Get to You.
Way back when, I started out not liking the Eagles much. They just didn’t seem hip enough for me and my avant-garde friends.
Then “One of These Nights” came out, and I became a convert. That song sounds just as good today as it did back in ‘75 or whenever.
Glenn’s passing was somewhat overshadowed by Bowie’s, but for me, I like Glenn’s music much more.
Yep, no doubt a whole lotta “baking” was going on back then...
btw, the Steve Hoffman mastered “DCC label” on gold CD of Hotel California is easily the best sounding version available. Now out of print, used versions go for hundreds on ebay when available.
Glen Frey had a lot to do with the departure of those guys. Then again the bands with longevity need a hard-headed business man, or a manager who doesn’t steal (those seem to be few & far between).
For anyone who subscribes to Netflix, there is an outstanding documentary called “History of the Eagles” which is over 3 hours long.
As long as it was, it was a thrill to listen to them that long. Needless to say, lots of commentary by Frey, Henley and others. Strong recommend if you like any Eagles tunes.
I’ve always enjoyed their music. All good things must come to end though, so if it was their last show then I have their songs to relive those memories. 8>)
