(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration’s (DOE/NNSA) will conduct a low-altitude helicopter flight over portions of the Arlington, Va., area July 22 to measure naturally occurring background radiation.
Officials from NNSA announced that the radiation assessment will cover approximately three square miles. A twin-engine Bell 412 helicopter, operated by the Remote Sensing Laboratory Aerial Measuring System from Joint Base Andrews, will be equipped with radiation sensing technology.
The helicopter will fly in a grid pattern over the area at 150 feet (or higher) above the ground surface, at a speed of approximately 80 miles per hour. Flyovers will occur only during daylight hours and are estimated to take about three hours to complete.
The measurement of naturally occurring radiation to establish baseline levels is a normal part of security and emergency preparedness. NNSA is making the public aware of the upcoming flights so that citizens who see the low-flying aircraft are not alarmed.

This is worrisome on multiple levels.
If government officials start leaving, government facilities start shutting down, and cops are suspiciously missing it’s time to go.
Yeah, they definitely have to get the word out because the helo is going to draw a lot of attention.
If one were going to test like this, you’d think they’d go to Area 51, or Utah, or Wyoming, etc.

Was with better half in eastern Virginia at a WWI and WWII aviation museum about four months ago. Had a wonderful tour guide. Many of the aircraft were still being flown a few times a year. Tour guide was nearing 70 plus years thus the perspective was only a few years removed from WWII

Is it against the law to moon a NNSA helicopter? I almost mooned Bill Clinton during his inauguration drive up Pennsylvania Avenue but my female colleagues said to just keep it in the office.
DOE/NNSA is likely not publishing rumors regarding their projects on their web site. You can see stories and videos of similar tests in the same area from the last few years.
Saw a rerun of “Baa Baa Black Sheep” a few months ago - with a couple of pristine P-38’s. I hope those made it to a museum somewhere, several decades ago.
