The raw CNN footage, minus commercials, when the start of the Gulf War ground war was announced. Part 1 of two parts for first tape of 23 Feb 1991. Part 2 is in the same playlist and shows President G.H.W. Bush announcing the start.

I have at least 8 3-hour Beta tapes of the ground war. This is the first tape split into two parts. The second tape is digitizing now, so that will also go up. If there is interest in this "You Were There" approach to history, I'll put up the rest. Let me know. Forgot Wolf Blitzer ever looked so young.

Unfortunately, YouTube won't accept the NBC Oliver North hearings. Copyright is claimed by "INA - Institut National de l'Audiovisuel" and blocked.

Thanks for the effort involved.

I remember watching CNN where there was a long line of MLRS launching rockets into the Iraqis. The CNN dunderhead asked an officer when the “ground war was going to start” who responded “look behind us, it’s started.”

From back when CNN was actually a news organization.

I haven’t watched much TV, then or since, but I like to see historic moments like this that I usually missed the first time!

So glad you like it! I was sitting in front of the tv for days during this. Still have the newspapers.

You knowm, I thought that very same thing. I remember when I liked watching it, and then it became more proselytizing against my conservative positions and I stopped listening. Notice that they also aren’t cluttering the screen with identifying crud.

It’s my original sources preference. Sometimes there’s a use for an hour summary, but sometimes I want to go back and just remember what it felt like to live through something.

Gratefully, I have no memory of such an event.

Thanks for the flashback!

I remember that period of time very vividly. I especially remember the summer of 1990 when the build-up (Desert Shield) began. At the time, I lived near an air base and I remember the constant rumble of military cargo planes coming and going. Then in January of 1991, when the air campaign started, I remember watching the coverage CNN (then the only cable news channel). I had no idea at the time that this would pretty much be a continuous war that would go on for decades.

1991 was the year I first bought a home computer. There was no Web at the time. Just a sketchy Prodigy connection that took you to a few lame screens of mostly stale information on a 1200 baud dial-up connection that costed $3.60/hr. If you were somewhat savvy (like I was at the time), you could get onto Usenet and do a few things with FTP (Archie) and Gopher. But for the most part, nobody but geeks even knew what the internet was. It would still be a few more years before the Internet exploded into our consciousness.

Had a shortwave radio at the time (Grundig 700) on which I was able to pick up some talk radio shows like Art Bell and Chuck Harder as well as some really "out there" ones I can't remember ..The early 1990s bring back some pretty good memories. It was a different time. Before 9/11. Even before Bill Clinton!

Your memories are wonderful! They help bring back mine, as well. I also have tapes before the ground war started and at the completion of hostilities. And forward to the next Iraq war, I have a tape of the carrier landing.

Sam

I believe Prodigy is where I first ran across you in the early 90’s.

I watched it a few times last year. Very cool. Shock and Awe was better because we had more cameras on the ground

Very likely you did! A lot of people from the Prodigy days came over to Free Republic. Now my memory has been jogged of people I used to talk with (and argue with) just about every day on those BB’s (mostly Whitewater BB) back in the 1990s. Judith Pedgrift, Karen Bixman, Jack Christy, Larry Barleen to name a few. I wonder how many of them are here under anonymous screen names.

I had 2-3 VS tapes but they got lost in my last 2 moves somewhere. But the memories of those guys and the scud missle alerts is still fresh in my head.

I was still young and new into politics when all that started and remember thinking brave those CNN guys were covering this from their hotel. My, how impressions have changed regarding news coverage since those days.
