Many people think that Scott Joplin was followed immediately by the big Swing bands. The biopics about Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and others, portrayed the music they played as sidemen in the 20’s and early 30’s as gooey, ricky-ticky stuff.

Could this song be about a crackdown on reefer trafficking?

"Oh, he said that she said that she didn't know where she got it,
But he said that she said that the law was going to stop it."

I saw Waring's Pennsylvanians perform in 1982. Although it was a far cry from their dance band days of the 1920's--more like their glee club of the 1940's--they still did some of their big hits like Sleep, Collegiate and Dem Bones.

In 1984, my parents worked with Fred Waring at a choral music workshop at Penn State. The day after the workshop ended, Waring passed away.
