Bill Gates: Sorry about Control-Alt-Delete
KFOR ^ | SEPTEMBER 21, 2017

Bill Gates is sorry that he made it so annoying to log in to your computer.

The billionaire Microsoft co-founder admitted Wednesday that the Control-Alt-Delete function originally used to get into Windows computers is an awkward maneuver.

“If I could make one small edit, I’d make that a single key,” Gates said Wednesday on a panel at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum in New York City.

It’s a confession Gates has made before. In 2013, he blamed IBM for the issue.

“We could have had a single button. But the guy who did the IBM keyboard design didn’t want to give us our single button,” Gates said at a Harvard University event at the time.

Users can press a single key to log in — not three — on Apple’s Mac computers.

Control-Alt-Delete is also the combination of keys used to force the computer to quit when it freezes.

The tech luminary, along with his wife, is the co-chair of the world’s largest private charitable foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The couple teamed up with dignitaries like President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in New York on Wednesday to promote their new Goalkeepers report, which tracks progress on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Since I dislike him intensely already, this is just one more thing to help tip me into full-blown hatred. :)

Bill,

Please bring back Windows XP Professional. It is the greatest OS in the history of computing. (80s reference - "If you like it so much EEE why don't you marry it?") Yeah, I would, sarcastic voice in my head. It's that great.

Bill Gates just needs to ALT+F4 on Microsoft.

I don’t even need to login to my locked computer most of the time. It knows me when I approach it and unlocks automatically.

I’ll give you that. Windows XP was the only Microsoft OS that sometimes worked well.

Control-Alt-Delete is perfectly OK. It is almost impossible to enter it by accident.

The Caps Lock key is a serious problem. How many hours have been wasted by people accidentally pressing that miserable key?

Why can’t you change caps/non-caps by pasting and altering?

I’m sorry about his swiss cheese security.

Headshake.

I don't know what you mean by "pasting and altering." I have not seen any "convert to lower case" utilities, but I'm sure they exist, since they would be trivial to write. Such utilities would fix a problem that never should have existed. If the standard key sequence to start caps lock had always been, for example, Control-Alt-Shift, capitalization accidents would be rare.

There are utilities that in effect shut off the caps lock key, so you have to physically hold down the shift key to get the same effect as caps lock. AFAIK that's as good as it gets, short of removing the damn key physically.

Yep. Especially when gaming on a PC. Furiously operating WSDAQ and E and the shift key and the control key, it’s too easy to hit caps lock and screw up. I finally went into config and disabled the caps lock function, then remapped the key for games to kill it.

Whoa, dude! It's been around for maybe 25 years in Word. I know it can be tough keeping up with the rapid change of pace in computer software. ;>)

And, if you accidentally type in all lower case, you can just as easily change to SHOUTING CASE with a click.

Does it work with passwords? I just pull the damn key out on every keyboard I use, seriously.

OT -— but I’ve come to the conclusion that Windows 10 has only one function in life, and that is to update itself continuously.

I’d rather have the old arrangement where right Ctrl and Caps Lock are swapped. It’s a lot more natural to invoke when two keys (ctrl, alt) are quite close to each other.

In pondering the design of his OS I can only surmise that Bill Gates gets a nickel every time Windows is rebooted.
