NHL’s attempt to avoid political controversy misfires
New York Post ^ | September 30 2017 | Larry Brooks

Posted on 10/01/2017 8:06:32 AM PDT by Mr_Moonlight

For as much as a segment of the hockey population would encourage NHL players to kneel or engage in other symbolic protest during the playing of the anthem, there is surely another segment that would encourage players to wear MAGA red hats during warmups or during on-camera interviews.

And as much as we have players who might be prone to sit, we also have players who would be prone to wear the hat.

If you can have one expression of opinion, you surely must also have the other.

This article by Larry Brooks is a fine example of journalistic provocation ... ie: creating a controversy where none exists. Winning sports teams have been visiting the White House to meet the President for as far back as I can remember, and it was always considered an honor.

Shame on Brooks to drag the NHL into this -- a story in search of a 'cause'

Gary Bettman’s message/advice/order to the Board of Governors ... “Stay out of it.”

Smart man. Hockey is going to increase in popularity. Hockey has its knuckleheads, but you can't see the ugly tattoos, it has far less player misconduct outside the rink, and has no thug culture or rap and no one talks about politics. It is a white sport.

And most of the black players in the NHL are Canadian anyway.

I guess Larry Brooks felt a need to write this stupid piece because he didn't have anything else to write about in the days before the start of the NHL season.

I saw something yesterday that some were trying to goad PK Subban into protesting with some kind of ridiculous virtue signaling as we are seeing the the NFL - even though he is a Canadian citizen.

Just as an aside, I always stand with hand on heart during the anthem(s) at a hockey game ... US and Canadian anthems ... its a matter of respect for the two countries that gave us this great game :)

Here’s a crazy idea: do your protesting on your own time.

Most leaders of a company would be upset at employees that brought down a bunch of heat on their company, especially when they’re doing it on the clock. The NFL brass shows just how deluded they are.

Brooks is the idiot who always promotes the Rangers to buy the highest priced free agent or pending free agent available (Jagr/Nash/Richards as examples) as a must have and then when they fail describes the reasons why it didn’t work as if he knew it all along.

He’s a hack. Always has been, always will be.

I sometimes wonder if he’s always trying to undermine the Rangers on behalf of the Devils. He was a VP of public relations for NJ back in the 1980s and worked as one of their radio announcers for a while.

The Russian players stand for our National Anthem, and they stay very quiet about politics. They’re damn good hockey players too.

It is a white sport.

Can't just call it an All American sport, eh? Whatever...

I guess driving the wedge in even deeper is more satisfying to some people.

Holy crap, who CARES what the genetic makeup is of any athletes playing any sports?!? Just enjoy their skills and forget race!!! I like football, I love hockey, I love gymnastics, learning to like tennis, etc. Whatever my kids play is my favorite sport, and I don’t even want to focus on race. Get it outa there. Just play the [expletive] game!!

I don't. Never have.

One of the things I've always liked about sports, is the fact that it's one of the few merit based industries there is. A player's success in that business is solely determined by their individual performance - nothing else.

It's perhaps the best model there is, for how any enterprise should be run.
