If the room receipt is authentic then there may be other leaks and the leakers may feel more safe with an alternative journalist in contrast to a so-called legit news organization. This might be especially true of LE. If there is a cover-up, then low-level people involved would be chafing right about now IMHO.

I used to ready the Hardy Boys growing up but I had a voracious appetite for reading so I would read my sister's Nancy Drew books as well. Pretty much the same genre of sub-teen detective fiction except from a feminine point of view.

There was another child detective series called The Happy Hollisters that was more family based. I cut my teeth on those books when I was about 7 or 8 years old. I must have read every book in that series at least 3 or 4 times.
