Medical emergency units responded to the incident and provided first aid to the young victim before rushing her off to nearby the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, ABC News reported.

The incident occurred at the Dante B. Fascell Port of Miami around 8am (pictured: Captain Ignatius Carroll) Doctors later announced that the eight-year-old had died after succumbing to her injuries.

What led to the girl falling from the second-story atrium aboard the cruise ship while docked at the Dante B. Fascell Port of Miami is still unknown.

Carnival Cruise Lines spokesperson Jennifer de la Cruz said in a statement that the ship's command notified police immediately following the incident and transferred the victim to the vessel's medical center.

It’s never the fall that kills ya...

Poor kid. What a lousy way to go. :(

My heart goes out to her parents. Kids can get themselves in a jam really quick.

Well, there's no "good" way for an 8 year old to go.But having worked in a big city ER for 20 years I can assure you that hers wasn't the ugliest type of death that one can experience.

I have seen fairly young children wander around cruise ships by themselves.....

Today at a movie theater bathroom were two 4 or 5 years old....one climbing on to the sink
I thought the mom must be there....
...nope....a cousin was somewhere.....outside they said
If someone had kidnapped them no one would ever know
I looked for the cousin.....nope, and the little girls vanished

I am a rugby fan and Glendale Colorado has a professional team and a dedicated rugby stadium and practice fields. One thing everyone comments on is kids can play “unsupervised” inside the stadium and all the adults look out for them. Quite refreshing.

Considering how rare these events are, I’m convinced that there’s more to the story regarding the parents. Hopefully we’ll find out. Kids just don’t fall off balconies on cruise ships every day.

That is awful. Most cruise ships have a kids area where parents can park them while they’re enjoying a vacation. There’s no excuse for letting youngsters wander unattended like that.

What led to the girl falling from the 2nd story window?

Gravity.

“Kids can get themselves in a jam really quick.”

Some posts assume the child was alone. But it only takes a second for the child to climb three rings to sit on the railing while mom and dad are getting their photo taken or something. So sad.

Well - I have no idea what happened - and having seen those balconies up close and personal, it wasn’t a simple matter of an 8 year old just falling over the balcony railing. It is too tall unless she was 12+ feet tall and just stepped over the 3 foot+ tall railing.

I hate to speculate, but I sure try to imagine HOW such an accident could happen -and it comes back again to the most common issue - total failure to supervise children (and some children need more supervision than others).

This is sad.

Soooo sad. My guess is that she was playing on the railing. My daughter will jump to railings and hold herself up on them with straight arms like on a gymnastics bar. So I told her this story. Heartbreaking. Prayers for the family.

Exactly. I’m not blaming the parents. They could have been in the same room for days and when they went to the bathroom or got dressed she never got into trouble before. But this time she decided to play on the railing. You can’t have them in your exact line of vision 24/7.

Gravity suspected?

I agree. No little kid should have to die; even BEFORE they’re born. :(
