Authorities say a teenage girl has been killed in a hunting accident in Alabama.
News outlets report the 15-year-old was shot on Monday about 20 miles southwest of Birmingham.
Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies believe the girl and an adult family friend had been on a youth hunt. Authorities say the girl climbed down from a tree stand while they prepared to leave. As the friend passed down her rifle, deputies say the gun fired and struck the teen.

This is why I always waited to load the weapon until I got into the tree stand and unloaded it before climbing down the tree stand.
Sad, RIP. This couldn’t have happened if we had just passed a law requiring universal background checks and one for hi-cap mags too.

Hunting “accidents” don’t occur unless firearms handling safety precautions are not correctly followed.

That’s is. A gun with an empty chamber hasn’t killed anyone that I’m aware of, unless used as a club.

I did not know that they hunted youth in Alabama.
Gun safety 101 ... first two steps:
Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
Assume that the firearm is always loaded.

Saw that, and actually have a comment to make on that, but wouldn’t be prudent.
My brother was shot when out hunting in 1980.
Through and through his thigh.
Just has an ugly scar to match the one he’s been carrying on his shoulders since birth...

I thought the issue with the Remington was slam firing and this doesn't sound like a slam fire.
If you mean the weapon was prone to fire when the bolt was closed, I heard that.
I also read of cases where the thing went off if you bumped it (safety ON).
I have a couple, and even more so than my other weapons, I handle them both as if they were loaded, safety off, always.
Back in the late 1800's, maybe.
