So...is Kaspersky software safe to use?
A query from a friend about Kaspersky | 11/15/17 | Me, Myself, & I

Posted on 11/15/2017 6:43:19 PM PST by EinNYC

I came home tonight to find an answering machine message from a friend considering installing Kaspersky Internet Security on her computer. But, she had heard of the recent Israeli hack into Kaspersky and the rumors that Kaspersky is collecting info for the Russian government.

I have read several authors' discussions about whether Kaspersky is safe to use. I have used it for about a decade or so, and find it to be excellent.

I'd be interested to know what FReepers think, particularly those of you with a computer security background!

I have used Kaspersky, but I would favor BitDefender or Avira now.

Great, unbiased testing agailable here:

I used Kaspersky for years, until MS got their act together. Kaspersky is fine.

Sometimes trying to save a few dollars creates problems.

It was in the news that a lot of agencies that used K, stopped using it, because of concerns.

I would recommend Norton.

My experience has been very positive with Symantec/Norton products as they operate in background with minimal attention needed. McAfee is decent, yet seems to require a slightly greater degree of user administration. Kaspersky and Trend are other tools. It is certainly wise and prudent to run security software on devices.

Its very good. But it has fallen out of favor because it “sees” FBI, NSA, etc as an attack or a risk. The US Govt wants them to turn a blind eye to them and allow them to penetrate your machine at will.

UK spymasters want the backdoor Kaspersky won’t give them. Also, UK spymasters say Trump is a Russian spy.

Even given all the fear mongering regarding Kaspersky, I haven’t yet heard about them actually taking advantage of the backdoors that may or may not exist in their product. But I have heard a lot of good things regarding the quality of their product.;

In my experience, it's absolutely the best if you configure it right which is exactly why the same people pushing a Hillary/Deep State "Russia" meme attack it and removed it from government computers.

With no chance of hiding electronic communications everything is slowed down back to the sixties pace when couriers and face to face meetings were used. That's one of the reasons why it seems like nothing is going on behind the scenes.

There's probably a parallel & secure system being set up, but that's even slower than trying to move on the legal front with fifty year old clandestine communication protocols.

Whether or not doing it the old fashioned way can reach the action stage fast enough remains to be seen.

All, JMHo, and like butt holes, everyone has one.

I'll look at and test the recent BitDefender but I'll have to ask a few folks who have a dim view of Avira just why they feel that way. Sometimes their dim view amounts to not liking what it takes to configure it or something in the interface. Not exactly great reasons to shoot down a good security application, IMHo.

actually it depends on if you want all of your info available to the Russians. understand every file on your system will be transmitted to the fsb. Not up for debate.

Kaspersky is technically very good at protecting computers from malware. It regularly scores fairly high in the percentage of recent threats it provides protection from. It also has a fairly minimal impact on performance compared to many alternatives.

The downside is that the company that produces Kaspersky has close ties to the Russian government.

Because of what security software does, it inherently monitors all the activity on your computer and has access to just about all your information. It’s safe to assume that any security product has the ability to spy on everything you do, or brick your machine, if the people behind it want to badly enough.

A U.S-based company is probably only going to use that capability for something like a very serious crime or national security situation. The question is what situation Kaspersky might use their backdoor capabilities?

If you are using your computer for personal use only, I would be fine with using Kaspersky. They’re not going to destroy their business model to spy on what web sites you are surfing or drain your personal bank accounts.

If you are using the computer for professional activity and handle information that is at all sensitive (either industrial or government information), I would choose something other than Kaspersky.

But seriously, you think you gain ANY safety by using an American company. All are in bed with the US Government. So I can understand the US Gov avoiding a Russian product, but nobody else needs to worry.
And I suspect this “Kasperski is in with the Kremlin” is more Hillary and DNC “Russia” crap. We are being sold a bill of goods lately.
