Texas Rangers pitcher Cole Hamels wasn't able to move into his dream Missouri mansion- so he gave it to a children's charity just in time for Christmas.

Hamels, 33, and his wife, Heidi, announced Monday they are donating their $9.75million mansion and 100 acres of land in southwest Missouri to a charity that provides camps for children with special needs and chronic illnesses and their siblings.

The 32,000-square foot home will be donated to Camp Barnabas.

'Seeing the faces, hearing the laughter, reading the stories of the kids they serve; there is truly nothing like it,' Hamels said in a release from Hamels Foundation. 'Barnabas makes dreams come true, and we felt called to help them in a big way.'

And that’s how you make change rather than “taking a knee” to whine. Kudos.

I hope they sell it. else they’ll have to funnel donations for the charity into maintenance.

They are a class act.

I think "Survivor" Heidi has been a big part of their charitable efforts.

Wow, what a great thing to do. I hope the charity can afford to maintain it. The best thing might be to sell it and put the money in a trust. I would think it would cost $50K a year to maintain the property.

it looks unfinished in the picture.

Hope the charity has ideas to use the property wisely and have it sustain itself. christmas tree farm, gar dent o grow some of own food, animals for food. I wonder what taxes are?

Real estate/property taxes don’t exist for non-profits in a lot of areas. If the charity decides that the property will become too much of a financial obligation, they can probably sell. (Some donations have don’t-sell clauses, but I’m guessing Hamels ain’t that guy.)

$50,000!

Funny!

$500,000 maintenance would be a start.

Cutting the grass will be $500 a week at least.
Replacing shrubs and trees that die out (not including seasonal changes) will be $15,000 a year.
Starting up and shutting down the sprinkler system will be $2000 a year.
Etc.

Certainly unfinished in the picture. Probably taken last time a Google drone flew over the area, God knows when.

Why would anyone want a house that big and expensive. The land is awesome but a smaller house would suffice. But kudos for giving it to a worthy cause.

In case people are wondering...

“Cole Hamels signed a 6 year / $144,000,000 contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, including a $6,000,000 signing bonus, $144,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $24,000,000. In 2018, Hamels will earn a base salary of $22,500,000, while carrying a cap hit of $22,500,000.”

I suspect it will be tax exempt now that a charity owns it so the local tax collector is going too be hardest hit. Not to mention the school district. There are some unintended consequences of this donation. I bet they sell it.

Would like to know what advice Hamels accountants gave him this gift. Still a really really nice gesture.

He really won't miss it then, but there are a LOT of other sports figures with super contracts like this, who never give a thought to those less fortunate, so I wish him nothing but the best.

Happy Clinton Impeachment Day!

On this date in 1998 The House of Representatives
made William Jefferson Blythe (“Bubba”) Clinton
only the second President to be Impeached.

One of our idiot sports guys here in DFW suggested it was because of the limit on mortgage interest in the new tax bill.

Many huge houses are white elephants. People don’t think of the operating costs like heat, air conditioning, taxes, insurance, etc. At some point they need painting and re-roofing. It is one of the reasons the Biltmore estate home was donated.

Even at a much smaller level, say a 4,000 to 5,000 square foot house, these expenses can require substantial income. In 15-20 years there is going to be a need to repurpose a lot of McMansions.
