We had a couple mid tower Acer Predators with I7 processors running primarily World of Warcraft and simply upgraded the video cards to the newer 1050's. These ran on the existing power supplies. While the 1050's don't allow us to run the game on full, high settings. The game is running very nicely and didn't require any further upgrades.
In your case, I'm not sure what PWS the 970 needs and whether you can upgrade your power supply, but I would look at a couple options.
You could look at upgrading the case to a mid tower along with a new power supply. A local shop should allow that for about $140-$160. Then, you can just throw the 970 in there and you should be good to go.

When it was time to upgrade my old Core 2 Duo, I kept my old regular size desktop and took advice from my son (an Intel engineer). We (son and grandson who is a gamer) decided on 750 watts, 32 GB RAM, i7 as fast as you can afford, 500 GB solid state drive, 3-6 TB HD, GTX 1050 and a 24" 4K monitor.
OS initially will be latest openSUSE and will put something else in virtualbox.
