NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) A soldier visiting New York City who had been reported missing following a deadly fire in the Bronx was among the 12 people killed in the massive blaze, sources tell CBS2.
As smoke engulfed the building on Prospect Avenue just before 7 p.m. Thursday, family after family desperately ran out, barefoot and freezing, to try and get to safety.
When I wake up, all I see is the flames going up, kids are on the fire escape, said neighbor Rafael Gonzalez. It was one apartment and then it escalated to two apartments. It just kept going next and up it escalated.

Kinda long I guess. I wouldn't have thought of that. Most wouldn't in their panic unless drilled and prepared.
We lost a single mom 23 and four beautiful children, 3 in the mobile home fire and two of the children died a few days later in the hospital.
The other one a family of four, guess it might have been a mobile home, looked like a cute little ranch home secluded behind trees. Two elderly parents and two sons in their 30's. One got out but died in the hospital.
So sad. Right on Christmas, one just before.
The one in NY, feel so bad for the victims and other families. Over and over I'm telling myself a good reason not to live in multi-family dwelling unless you have no other choice. One fire routs all the residents and Red Cross has to find them places.
Very sad. Most people on FR don’t know how these buildings are arranged - there’s a central stairway (even if there’s also an elevator) and when the mother of the little boy who was playing with the burners ran out of the apt with her kids, she left the door open. So the fire shot right out of her apartment and up the stairs.
And of course, the landlord had some violations against him for non-working smoke detectors, etc., although in this case it probably wouldn’t have helped.
Most of these people are just decent poorer working people, some of them immigrants and some not, and fortunately the rest of the block seems to be coming together to help them.
