Watch Scott Cochran destroy 2017 runner-up trophy with sledgehammer

Any mystery about Alabama's runner-up trophy from last season was answered Thursday.

It exists no longer.

A video posted from the Instagram account of Crimson Tide receiver Jerry Jeudy shows strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran destroying the hardware. He raised the trophy above his head and threw it to what appears to be the locker room floor.

Cochran finished off the remains with a sledgehammer. The language was not suited for all ages.

Alabama lost 35-31 to Clemson in last season's national championship game. The Tide plays Georgia on Monday night for this season's title.

Watch the full video below but there's a strong language warning. It's definitely not suited for all ages.

There goes any idea of sportsmanship, and being a good loser.

“Winners do not come in second.”

But apparently they still get a trophy!

I always thought less of Lombardi for that remark.

It is one of the things that has corroded our civil society.

Hopefully they get another one this year.

But then if I had gotten my wish this would have been an SEC-free championship game.

I totally understand his sentiment. I do.

However it also is not his trophy to destroy. Its the university’s trophy. Get a mock trophy and destroy that.

Silly coach. The Bama way is to claim the title when no one is looking.

Vince Lombardi — ‘Show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser’

I've heard that quote attributed to "Chief" Wallace Newman, who played for the USC Trojans in the 1923 Rose Bowl game and went on to coach the Whittier College Fighting Poets. It has also been attributed to Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne. In any case, I fully agree with it.

While a small portion of Bama Fans blame that Clemson Lose on a “pick” play and non call by the refs, the majority of fans blame the Tide for too many 3 and outs in the 2nd half.

So the smashing of the 2nd place trophy had a lot to do with Bama improving themselves enough to win. That trophy highlighted a mediocre performance that should not be tolerated by a championship team.

However, I acknowledge that teams need to man up to their loses and act like sportsman. But use them to get better, not just accept them.

Just another example of punk sports culture that has infected most sports and made them unwatchable. It’s not about being a good loser it’s about sportsmanship. The end of the Stanley Cup in hockey is a great example of how it can be done. Guys who literally were trying to knock each other’s heads off line up and shake hands. To me that’s shows respect for the game and your opponent and that’s not being a loser.

Exactly. Sports are about competition inside of rules in a society that respects the rule of law.

The “win at any cost” idea is law of the jungle stuff.

It may be appropriate when fighting for your life, or the life of your country. But not in a rule based sport.

If you read the 2nd article you will see were a lot of players decried about the video becoming public, it was supposed to be a direct private message to the players in the locker room. It was not part of some game display.

If either of you can post where 2017 Bama football at the end of a game failed to act like sportsman after a lose please post it. I do not recall it happening.
