Water flowed into Terminal 4, soaking stranded travelers luggage and forcing a partial evacuation of the terminal, the major arrival point for international travelers. Incoming flights to Terminal 4 were shut down for several hours. Up to 3 inches of water formed in the arrivals and customs inspection areas of the terminal and then flowed outside onto a roadway, which was closed because of icing, Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said at a news conference. He said the arrivals area and customs office should reopen within several hours.
The volume of water severely compromised all the operations, Cotton said, adding that delays could last for days.
The airport was already jammed with frustrated travelers whose flights were delayed or canceled by the bitter cold that has gripped the East Coast for days.
Passengers reported spending hours sitting on the tarmac before deplaning, then spending hours and sometimes days inside the terminal waiting for flights. Luggage covered large sections of the airport floor.
Its very hectic, said Andrew Westrem, 28, who traveled home to New York from Los Angeles. I see other people upset but theres not much you can do. Youre at the mercy of weather.

Just for the heck of it I researched world’s best airports ...NY Kennedy not even in the top 50 . NO surprise there .
DiBlowsio’s fault.
Meanwhile over here in Abu Dhabi, they are building an even more impressive terminal that will be bigger and nicer than the relatively new one already in use. Infrastructure baby!

Who’s in charge with water mains at JFK? NYCity? The Port Authority? Has the finger pointing begun?
I’m in Japan . Both Tokyo airports , Haneda and Narita , are in the top 20 . Several other Asian airports also .
Also Osaka’s Kansai Airport in top 20 .
I watched a TV show some years ago about building an airport in Japan-—they actually created land for it-——Osaka,I think.
A beautiful place.
.
yup - when your squander $6 trillion ( and counting ) blowing sh^t up in the Mideast; your infrastructure gets negelected.
“Sounds like a typical NYC cluster f@#k.”
As long as it was all NY democrats who were punished I’m ok with that.
Yes - Kansai Airport which serves the Osaka / Kansai area .
“Meanwhile over here in Abu Dhabi, they are building an even more impressive terminal that will be bigger and nicer than the relatively new one already in use. Infrastructure baby!”
If they found corrupt politicians like we have they would be beheaded.
Thanks-—the engineering was incredible.
.
Japan - a country with a populatiob roughly 1/3 that of the USA , turns out roughly 170,000 engineering grads annualy compared to 237,000 in the US . South Korea , with a pop. of less than half that of Japan , turns out 147,000 !
